Details of Service Bantry General Hospital provides services to the population of a unique, rural, area encompassing West Cork and South Kerry. The area extends from the Beara and Sheep’s Head Peninsulas in the south to Kenmare in the west, Macroom and Clonakilty in the north and Timoleague in the east and includes several inhabited islands. The hospital is located approximately 60 miles from Cork University Hospital in Cork City. Under the Reconfiguration of Services Cork & Kerry, BGH has been designated the only Model 2 Remote Rural hospital. Bantry General Hospital has inpatients and day-case beds providing acute general hospital services to the people of West Cork. Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: • Integrated, locally planned and delivered • Easier to access and navigate • Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically-based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level. The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region. Clinical Nurse Manager, High Dependency Unit General Hospital
Details of Service Bantry General Hospital (BGH) is a 90 bed rural and remote model 2R Acute General Hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and day patient services. It provides undifferentiated medical care and day case surgical activity for the people of West Cork and South Kerry. It is a member of the South/South West Hospital Group. BGH operates on a 24 hour open access basis for undifferentiated medical intake.The hospital caters for all acute medical emergencies and has a Medical Assessment Unit and a High Dependency Unit. It also has a Rehabilitation and Acute Stroke Unit and a Care of the Elderly Ward. Bantry General Hospital provides elective Day Case Surgery, Minor Procedures and Endoscopy Day Cases. Special Nursing includes Cardiac Rehabilitation and Stroke. BGH is a site for clinical placements for the undergraduate student nurse programme delivered in partnership with the Institute of Technology, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Portiuncula University Hospital provides 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with a 24/7 Emergency Department which had 30,283 attendances in 2023. The hospital serves the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly and has a natural referral pathway to the Midlands. Ballinasloe is the largest town in County Galway. The town has excellent junior and secondary schools and is close to the University of Galway and the Technology University of Shannon in Athlone. Education & Training: Portiuncula University Hospital is a recognised site for training of undergraduate medical students from University of Galway and graduate entry medical students from University of Limerick. Overall job role: The Coombe hospital provides neonatal services in a Level 3 (Tertiary) Unit, with 40 cots. This role will provide a specialist nutrition and dietetic service for neonatology. They will provide expertise in nutritional assessment of the neonate; provision and monitoring of enteral and parenteral nutrition; support and monitoring adequacy of nutritional intake in infants transitioning to breastfeeding or infant feeding; assessment and monitoring of growth; provision of therapeutic diets; outpatient follow-up; and research, audit, training and education on nutrition-related topics. They will act as a resource and provide expert opinion, advice and guidance to dietetic colleagues and other healthcare professionals. In conjunction with the Dietitian Manager, they will develop local policies and care pathways for neonatal nutrition. They will participate in the development of the strategic direction of the Nutrition & Dietetic service in conjunction with the Dietitian Manager and stakeholders.
