Location: Crop Science Department, Oak Park, Carlow. Reporting To: Head of Department and/or other nominated manager as maybe identified from time to time. Grade/Salary: Technologist Grade 1, with a starting salary of €33,387 per annum. The current salary scale is €33,387 to €64,981. Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82. Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc). Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy. Basic Function: We seek a highly motivated candidate to complete research tasks, encompassing disciplines including molecular biology, plant physiology, plan-microbe interactions and field-based phenotyping. While a significant portion of time will be aligned with laboratory duties, periods of time will also be required to phenotype novel plant collections under glasshouse/field conditions. He/she must be able to successfully complete designated research tasks and critically have a proven capacity for problem solving. That said, daily functions will vary from field assessments to intensive glasshouse experiments, to laboratory-based tasks and associated data analysis. Hence the ability to multi-task across several disciplines will be an essential competency for the completion of this role. As a core member of the Crop Science department, the successful candidate will also be required to assist in the design and implementation of operational procedures by glasshouse users in accordance with necessary plant hygiene requirements. Background: Teagasc is the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority and, as such, undertakes national land-use research, teaching and advisory activities. Its mission is to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and the broader bio-economy that will underpin competitiveness and sustainability. Teagasc is internationally recognized for its research programme on Crops, Environment and Land Use and is Ireland’s leading research institute on matters pertaining to the rural environment. Teagasc continues to invest in novel breeding techniques to underpin its existing crop and environmental sciences research programme. As a result, the Teagasc Centre at Oak Park is fully equipped with extensive field research facilities through to state of the art molecular laboratories and associated facilities along with extensive glasshouse facilities. Main Duties and Responsibilities:  Conduct lab-based experimentation to assist in goals of the department to support the development of stress resilient crop varieties.  Utilize novel breeding techniques (e.g. genetic modification) to support functional genomics goals.  Complete glasshouse experiments to investigate plant – microbe interactions for biotic stressors of economic importance plus plant growth promoting capacity of known bacteria.
