Consultant Anaestheiologist
Requirment to hold Specialty Registration on Medical Council Register is essential. This post is for 1 year 32 hours - Portiuncula University Hospital 5 Hours - Roscommon University Hospital Brief Description of existing service/specialty The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) currently has 6 post holders. These post holders provide 24/7 cover to the PUH site. The person appointed will be required to participate in the Anaesthesiology 1:6 on-call rota at Portiuncula University Hospital. The PUH site provides elective surgical procedures (with an emphasis on day surgery) to multiple specialties. These include general surgery, gynaecology, urology, paediatric urology, maxillofacial surgery &paediatric dentistry. Two of the six Consultant Anaesthesiologists also provide day care theatre services at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH). One Consultant Anaesthesiologist is attached to UHG where he provides theatre and education services. PUH provides maternity services to the region of East Galway, Athlone, West Offaly and Roscommon. Approximately, 1,600 deliveries of infants per year take place in the maternity unit. The Anaesthesiology Department provides support in relation to analgesia (epidural), anaesthesia for caesarean sections and intensive care/inter-hospital transfer services for critically ill maternity patients. PUH is an integral part of the Women’s and Children’s Directorate Saolta group with several obstetric posts shared with UHG Maternity Unit. The Intensive Care Unit provides support for medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric patients. There are 5 ICU (ventilated) beds, 2 HDU beds and 1 coronary care bed. There are strong links with UHG intensive care as part of the National Critical Care Programme. Currently PUH provides chronic pain services on week days. Clinical Nurse Manager St Finbarrs Hospital, Older Persons Services
St. Finbarr’s Hospital is the largest community hospital in the HSE South. The hospital has 88 beds consisting of continuing care beds for the elderly, a Community Nursing Unit. The Hospital is based on a wider campus site which has many community based services. The Hospital supports the undergraduate BSc nursing programme as a placement site as well as post graduate placements for the Higher Diploma in Gerontology. There is a strong link to UCC on joint research projects in gerontological care. Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: • Integrated, locally planned and delivered • Easier to access and navigate • Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level. The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region. OVERALL JOB ROLE: The role of the Multi Task Attendant (MTA) is an integral part of the household team to ensure the delivery of high quality, person centred care to patients / service users (whether direct or indirect), under the direction of the household manager. The role requires a high degree of flexibility. Multi Task Attendants will be required to move between different wards / departments and provide duties relating to cleaning, portering and catering functions to support service need. In keeping with HIQA and HACCP standards Multi Task Attendants do not move between defined cleaning, portering and catering roles at the same time / on the same day / shift (except in exceptional circumstances). The provision of cross cover for breaks is a key requirement. Responsibilities & Accountabilities: The person chosen will be: • Accountable to the Household Services Manager or designated Deputy • Maintain throughout the Hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities. • Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Values of the Hospital. • Ensure the provision of a consistently high service within designated areas that are satisfactory to management and the patient. • Ensure that hygiene standards are maintained within designated areas and to ensure high levels of patient care, maintaining a high level of cleanliness within the designated areas, complementary with cleaning schedules. • To provide a cleaning service in all areas of the Hospital. • The Multi Task Attendant will report to the appropriate Manager (or designated deputy) of the area they are working in. • Report promptly for duty and comply with all Hospital regulations in relation to the use of the time and attendance system. • Ensure that full uniform as provided by the hospital is clean and worn at all times while on duty. • Maintain personal hygiene at all times so as to ensure that the highest standards of a professional image are presented within the hospital as well as maintaining best practice with regard to infection control. • Ensure patients and public are dealt with in an appropriate polite manner at all times. • Adhere to all Policies and Procedures including treating in a confidential manner any information obtained during the course of employment. • Be familiar and comply with the hospital infection control policy. • Be familiar and comply with hospital policy on waste disposal. • Be familiar and comply with lifting and handling techniques, Manual Handling. • Be familiar and comply with the hospital fire policy, fire drill and major disaster policy. • Undertake any relevant training related to the role at the request of the Household Services Manager or designated supervisor. • Take precautions against fire, accidents, incidents and report to the appropriate staff. • Attend meetings if requested by Line Manager / Senior Management of the hospital. • Attend all health and safety lectures when required. Remuneration: Remuneration is in accordance with the salary scale approved by the Department of Health & Children effective from 1st February 2026. Night shift premium as set out in the Department of Health & Children consolidated pay scale may apply to this position.
