Details of Service Bantry General Hospital is a model 2 hospital as part of CUH hospital group and is within the South / Southwest Hospital Group. Bantry General Hospital (BGH) is a model 2 rural and remote hospital serving the population of West Cork and South Kerry. BGH is the only model 2 hospital nationally receiving 999 ambulance calls and accepting undifferentiated medical patients. This is due to the large rural catchment area of the hospital and long distances to the nearest model 3 or model 4 hospital. Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Ophthalmology, Cataract & Corneal Fellowship

Contract info: Commencing ideally on 11th September 2025. Contract up to 12th July 2026 with the possibility of being extended. This post is designed to train the Fellow to a high level of cataract surgery. This will include training in pre-op evaluation, performing cataract surgery (including refractive cataract surgery) and post-operative patient management. The Fellow will also gain experience in the management of corneal and external eye diseases. This will include management of urgent and semi urgent corneal cases through a rapid access clinic and attending Consultant led clinics. The Fellow will also attend corneal operating lists and gain experience in corneal graft surgery, including penetrating keratoplasty, DSEK and DALK procedure. The Fellow will also gain experience in corneal refractive surgery by attending pre-op assessment clinics, observing refractive procedures and post-op care.
