Negotiating a Salary Review

If you feel that you deserve a salary increase or review, don’t chat to colleagues about it, Instead make an appointment to have a meeting with your Manager to discuss your request in a professional manner. Once the meeting has been confirmed the following scripts may help.

Sample Script 1

Start off positively:

“I just want to say that I really enjoy working with ……. Over the last …… I have thoroughly enjoyed working at ………. and having the opportunity to….. (Example; “train in our new recruits on the current process improvement project and designing and implementing the FAQ section on our website FAQ.

Now pop the question:

“I’ve called this meeting as I’d like to discuss my current salary and from my research it seems that I am underpaid compared to other people in similar roles – for example…….. (you could give examples). Like I said, I’m really enjoying working here and I’m very much looking forward to my future with the company, but I would be very grateful if you could review the situation”.

Sample Script 2

Start off positively:

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today.

Detail recent accomplishments, and your plan for the future:

In my current role, I’m excited to keep working towards key company goals and grow my personal responsibilities. As a result, I’d like to discuss my salary.

Now pop the question:

Based on the research I’ve done, which includes looking at averages for my job title and considering my tenure here, my years of experience and skill set, I feel a salary increase of X% is appropriate. In the time since my last salary adjustment, I’ve worked on several initiatives that have added significant value to the company. For instance, in the last few months, I [insert example your most impressive accomplishment]. I would be very grateful if you could review my salary.

TIP; Your Salary is your business. Should you be successful in receiving a pay increase, keep it to yourself.
