Services and Liaison Librarian

The Purpose of the Role Applications are invited for the post of Services and Liaison Librarian, Research Collections, at the Library of Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin. This is an exciting new role to work with a team who support researchers, as well as and undergraduate and postgraduate students, in their use of the unique and distinctive collections in the Library’s care dating from 3,000 BC to the present day. The Services and Liaison Librarian, Research Collections, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the team who deliver study centre services, as well as supporting an expanding programme of academic-led seminars which are integrated into the Trinity curriculum and beyond. The successful candidate will be expected to focus on increasing positive engagement with the physical collections in a user-focussed environment, whilst also ensuring the careful handling of collections and their ongoing security. To successfully integrate the services, various policies and practices will require review and amendment. The Services and Liaison Librarian will report to the Head of Research Collections and engage regularly with the curatorial team of Assistant Librarians in the division to ensure adequate, in-depth research support is provided to study centre users, and ensure that the daily delivery of frontline support is provided at the highest possible level by the team of staff who welcome and supervise readers. The post holder will also regularly liaise with colleagues across the Readers’ Services division to ensure consistency across services in different library spaces. Context The Research Collections division is undergoing change with ongoing preparations for the redevelopment of the historic Old Library building, home to its world class collections and associated reading room space. The redevelopment project will deliver a new and inspirational Research Collections study centre and adjacent seminar facility for current and future users of the collections. In the interim period until building reopening, a temporary study centre facility will provide an integrated service in the Ussher Library basement: bringing together fully, for the first time, access to the collections of early printed books and special collections, with manuscripts and archives – adjacent to the Map Library reading room. This is a permanent, full-time position. The post is subject to satisfactory completion of a probation period. This position is 35 hours per week (pro-rata), 7 hours each day Monday to Friday, e.g. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with a lunch hour. It currently does not attract flexitime; however a flexible working day can be arranged by agreement with the line manager. In addition, the postholder will work on the Saturday Duty roster on a pro-rata basis (currently one in every seven for full-time equivalent staff) and some evening duties. Main Responsibilities This is a list of the tasks, duties and responsibilities for the role. Service • To evaluate, update and implement changes to policies and practices associated with the delivery of an integrated Research Collections study centre: including those associated with access and registration, material retrieval and issuing, service hours, enquiry handling, collection security, GDPR compliance, seminar bookings, etc. • To deliver a user-focused service for scholars and students at all levels, with the support of the team of staff who greet, supervise and assist users of the centre, and who deliver back-office activities. • To maintain oversight of the quality of user facilities and experiences, including upkeep and improvements of user guides and information on the webpage. • To monitor and analyse user feedback, visitor numbers and enquiry statistics with the purpose of identifying trends and then prioritising service developments or new initiatives. • To maintain oversight of the Centre’s supervision rota, and to address gaps due to absence/vacancy; to participate in reading room supervision, as required; and to work on a roster of Saturday and evening duty. • To meet regularly with the team delivering study centre service, to share experiences and updates, to provide regular training opportunities, to encourage personal development, and to support the implementation of new service objectives. • Liaison with the curatorial team to ensure expert level support is available to researchers and undergraduate and postgraduate students working with Research Collections material, and to promote long-standing partnerships with researchers. • Regular liaison with the three Deputy Heads of Reader Services responsible for space, digital systems and services, and teaching and research support to ensure consistency of service across the whole Library and ongoing improvements to services. • To maintain an awareness and participate in wider developments in the provision of excellent reader service by attending relevant meetings, seminars, workshops and other professional events as required, and liaising with colleagues in other academic libraries. • Contribute to wider library initiatives and working groups, such as those dealing with web services, offsite collection storage, the library management system, access policies, communications, conservation and digitisation programmes, etc. Collection care and data protection • To ensure the utmost care and security of the collections, and the compliance of readers and staff with necessary legislation (such as data protection and copyright, dignity and respect, and health and safety, etc.). General • To show a commitment to ongoing professional development. • Other related duties as directed by the Head of Research Collections. Person Requirements The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role. Qualifications • Good honours degree – essential. • Professional postgraduate qualification in Library or Information Studies, or Archival Management – essential. Knowledge • Understanding of and commitment to excellent customer service, and able to form lasting positive relationships with service users – essential. • An interest in a specific area or aspect of the Library’s Research Collections – desirable. Experience • At least two years’ experience; working in an academic library and/or with special collections in a customer facing role – essential. • Experience of managing staff, including determining objectives, motivating, and confident in delivering change during a complex period in the development of an organization – essential. Skills • Creative approach to problem solving, using initiative and collaborating with others to resolve issues and to deliver new services. • Excellent IT skills including experience with the suite of MS programmes - essential. • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and meet deadlines while paying attention to detail. SECTION 6: SALARY The Salary for the post is: €48,089- €57,572 basic per annum €48,089 - €49,561 - €51,039 - €52,537 - €59,047 (Maximum); - €55,806 - (1st LSI) (after 3 years satisfactory service on the Maximum) - €57,572 (2nd LSI) (after 3 years satisfactory service on the 1st LSI). Entry point to this scale will be determined in accordance with Circulars issued by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. In accordance with Departmental Circular letter EL 02/2011, a person who is not a serving local authority employee on or after 1st January 2011, will enter the scale for the position at a minimum point. Rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy. SECTION 7: LOCATION OF POST The base for working purposes shall be the location as determined by Cork County Council. Cork County Council reserves the right to assign you to any department, premises or district in use by the Council, now or in the future. Changes in location of employment will not result in payment of disturbance money or compensation. Holders of the office shall reside in the district in which their duties are to be performed or within a reasonable distance thereof. SECTION 8: WORKING HOURS The working hours at present provide for a five-day, thirty-five hour working week. A flexible working hours’ system is in operation and may be availed of subject to the terms and conditions of the FlexiTime Policy. All hours worked will be subject to the provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997 and the Organisation of Working Time Act (Regulations) 2001. The successful candidate may be required to work hours outside of normal working hours as required by his/her immediate Supervisor. SECTION 9: ANNUAL LEAVE The current annual leave entitlement is 30 days per annum or on a pro-rata basis for period worked. Notice of intention to take leave shall be given to the council at least two weeks before proposed leave commences. Cork County Council’s leave year runs from 1st January to 31st December. Granting of annual leave, payment for annual leave and arrangements for public holidays will be governed by the provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997 (as amended). SECTION 10: ELIGIBILITY TO WORK IN IRELAND Please note that in order to work in Ireland, a non-EEA National, unless they are exempted, must hold a valid Employment Permit. CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARDING OF A PLACE TO BECOME AN AIR CORPS TRAINEE MILITARY AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN IN THE AIR CORPS 1. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS To qualify, a candidate shall at the time of application be: (i) a citizen of the State, or be any other person who has a lawful entitlement to reside and work within the State for the period of time that is required for the purpose of any such appointment and (ii) be of good character and satisfy any security clearance required and (iii) meet the required minimum standards of medical and physical fitness. 2. AGE REQUIREMENT Candidates must be 18 years of age or above and under 39 years of age on 12th June 2024. Please note that the upper age limit may be the subject of review in advance of future Competitions. 3. MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must have attained the required minimum educational qualifications at the time of entry into the Air Corps. On enlistment, a candidate must have obtained specific minimum grades in the Leaving Certificate/National Equivalent. THE AIR CORPS The Air Corps currently operates twenty six aircraft in multi-role national aviation tasks. The types of aircraft include Learjet 45, CASA CN235 maritime patrol aircraft, Airbus CN295 maritime patrol aircraft, BN Defender, Pilatus PC-9M and PC-12. The Air Corps also operates Eurocopter EC135 and Leonardo AW139 helicopters. The primary role of the Air Corps is to provide support to the Army, Naval Service and An Garda Síochána in countering threats to State security on land, sea and air. In addition, the day to day peace time role of the Air Corps includes activities such as Maritime Surveillance, Fishery Protection, Garda Air Support Unit, Ministerial Air Transport, Emergency Aeromedical Service and Air Ambulance The Air Corps trains its own Military Pilot Officers, Military Aircraft Technicians, Military Air Traffic Controllers, Air Photographers and General Service personnel. Air Corps personnel may serve overseas as mandated by Government. 2. THE AIR CORPS TRAINEE MILITARY AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN PROGRAMME The purpose of the Air Corps Trainee Military Aircraft Systems Technician programme is to provide military aircraft technicians for the Irish Air Corps. The programme offers successful candidates the opportunity of becoming an efficient and disciplined member of the Air Corps The trainee technician undergoes full basic military training and passes out as a 3-Star soldier prior to commencing their technical training. This is a unique opportunity for an individual who has an interest in military training to also pursue a career in aviation maintenance. The initial military training affords the trainee technician an opportunity to develop skills which are applicable to the aircraft maintenance environment such as discipline, self-reliance, teamwork and working to exacting standards. The system of training is of the highest standard, and the training programme in the Air Corps Technical Training School has been developed to provide ab initio technical training. The programme offers successful candidates the opportunity to become an efficient and disciplined member of the Air Corps. The programme is aimed at meeting the current and future employment needs of the Air Corps by providing graduates with a Level 7 Degree. The programme offers an interdisciplinary approach whichin the students obtain a mix of technological and operational skills specifically related to Irish Military aviation requirements.
