Bushcraft Instructor
Location: Waterside House, Craigavon, however the post holder may be required to work at other locations throughout the Borough. (Reserve lists may be kept for same or similar posts throughout the Borough) Salary: Scale 5 SCP 14 – 19 £29,540 – £32,061 per annum pro rata for part time staff (Full time equivalent is based on 37 hours per week). Hours: 37 hours per week Monday to Friday. The postholder may be required to work additional hours and outside normal working hours to meet the needs of the post. Duration: Fixed Term Contract until 31 March 2027 – may be extended. The Council may retain a list of reserve candidates arising from this recruitment for any vacancies which may arise which are the same or similar and are of an equal grade of pay throughout the Council area. Such a reserve list will be compiled and held for a period of 12 months. All employees are expected to model the Customer Care behaviours of “Serve Passionately, Engage Positively and Deliver Consistently.” JOB PURPOSE: The Bushcraft Instructor will be responsible for the delivery of a wide range of outdoor pursuits activity sessions, Bushcraft courses, and wilderness expeditions and will also be required to lead groups on overnight courses, act as a guardian and cook meals ensuring the required standard of food hygiene and all participants nutritional needs are covered. The post holder will supervise and effectively utilise staff, casual workers and trainee placements ensuring all health and safety requirements are fulfilled. The Bushcraft Instructor will support the NR Project Officer in maintaining a high quality of service, encouraging greater enjoyment and participation in Bushcraft and outdoor leisure activities while bringing new innovative ideas to all courses and act as Duty Officer, as and when required. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide training, coaching, and various levels of instruction and assessment in diverse range of specialist outdoor pursuits, at various levels and locations across Northern Ireland. Maintain the national standard of instruction required by the National Governing Bodies. Formulate, design and deliver lesson plans and schedules for activities, courses and events. Continuously monitor and assess group dynamics considering environmental and external conditions and amend plans accordingly. Co-ordinate and manage the day to day Bushcraft operation. Supervise participants during overnight stays and non-activity periods. Evaluate and provide written reports for youth groups, schools and colleagues. Provide training assistance to casual instructors/Marine Ranger Trainees and work placement students. Plan, prepare & deliver a wide range of events on site and at various outdoor locations. Represent Kinnego Marina, Oxford Island and Coney Island at meetings, exhibitions and events throughout U.K. and Ireland as and when required. Conduct risk assessments and help with the development of procedures, Safe Systems of Work and systems relevant to the Bushcraft programme. Responsible for routine maintenance of specialist equipment, completing records/maintenance log books. Ensure the safe operation of all equipment within the facility. Take end of day till readings and record and reconcile all monies. Drive a range of vehicles in order to transport customers, staff and a range of equipment for the delivery of activity programmes and events across Northern Ireland. Respond to routine and serious incidents and emergencies. Coordinate with full range of emergency services to achieve a resolution and ensure all relevant Health & Safety procedures and follow up investigations are completed. Fulfil the role of Fire Marshal. Ensure hygiene and cleanliness is maintained in the postholder’s work area and exercise general security control over the premises to deter vandalism or abuse of the facilities and equipment. Actively participate in various working groups within the Centres. Act as key holder. Undertake any other relevant duties that may be required and are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Qualifications and Training • Hold one of the following instructional awards: ▪ Bushcraft Instructor Award ▪ GNAS Level 1 Instructor Award ▪ Forest School Leader Level 2 ▪ Outdoor Education ▪ Environmental Studies • Hold a valid first aid certificate (or become certified within 6 weeks of employment). If you do not hold any of the above qualifications, you must demonstrate 3 years experience in the below: • Additional Outdoor Instruction/Recreation Instructor or Leader Award. Application Experience • One year as an instructor or leader supervising groups or the public. • One year’s experience of working in the outdoor environment e.g., Forest School, Outdoor Education, Bushcraft, Horticulture. • One year’s experience of working with schools, youth groups or therapeutic programmes, including diverse and vulnerable participants.
