General Workshop Technician
Location: Dungannon Campus, however the post holder may be required to travel to other SWC Campuses; Enniskillen - Killyhevlin, Dungannon – Main Campus, Omagh – Main Campus, Cookstown - Kilcronnagh or Omagh - Gortin Road sites. Main Duties and Responsibilities To prepare workshop materials for use by lecturers and trainees. To organise tools and materials for trainees in an orderly and tidy manner. To maintain all equipment in a safe and secure environment. To practice good stock control including ordering, receipt, storage and issuing of all tools and materials. To check requisitions against documentation when received and comply with ‘Agresso’ requirements. To assist lecturers during practical classes and maintain a level of supervision and support at all times. To carry out regular routine checks on equipment to ensure any problems are noted and reported to the designated person so appropriate action is taken. Ensure accurate records for equipment checks and maintenance are available at all times, using the correct proformas. To carry out minor repairs to equipment as and when required and when properly trained to do so. To be proactive in Health & Safety issues relating to the section and across the wider College. Assist staff in the development and maintenance of safe working practices and procedures. Adopt a ‘Safety first’ approach to your own work and report any potential risks or hazards immediately. To assist with the distribution of Personal Protective Clothing as and when required and take responsibility for the maintenance of accurate stock records. To co-ordinate lockers, including distribution and return of keys to tutors and students. To participate in staff and personal development as and when required. Ensure all mandatory CPD is kept up to date and within the timelines identified by your line Manager or the Health and Safety Manager. To undertake or support the supervision of students within the teaching areas as necessary. To drive College vehicles between campuses if required. To undertake any other reasonable duties designated by Head of Department, Deputy Head of Department, Curriculum Manager, Campus Manager, Health and Safety Manager or direct Line Manager. NB: Outside of term time the post holder may be asked to perform general maintenance duties or support any wider college functions as required and take part in any staff rotas to provide adequate cover at key times of the academic year or when a need has arisen, directed by the Line Manager, Head of Department or Principal & Chief Executive. Qualifications/Experience • NVQ Level 2 or other equivalent Level 2 qualification in one of the following professional and technical training areas - Automotive, Electrical, Engineering, Joinery, Plumbing or related subject area. OR • 3 years relevant industrial experience in any of the areas listed above. • GCSE Maths and English (A – C) or equivalent Essential Skills Qualifications. Knowledge/Skills and Abilities • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; • Flexibility to work evenings if required; • First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake if appointed to the role; General • Access to a car and able to travel between campuses and other business use as required or the ability to demonstrate mobility. Terms and Conditions Terms and conditions of employment are those as laid down by the Non-Teaching Negotiating Committee for Further Education in Northern Ireland and are drawn from the conditions of service for NJC for local authorities staff. Salary Band 3 points 5-6 £24,790-£25,183 per annum. Commencing on point 5 £24,790 pro rata £13.20 per hour. Contract Type Fixed Term contract – June 2026 with possibility of extension. Hours of Work 16 hours per week. Holiday Entitlement 12 public holidays plus 23 days rising to 29 days after 5 years’ continuous service. Pro rata for part-time and temporary contracts.
