The Coronary Heart Attack Ireland Register (CHAIR) is a register that gathers information on hospital patients admitted to hospitals within the South West region with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in order to improve patient outcomes on discharge from hospital. CHAIR registers are in operation in S/SWHG Hospitals in Cork and Kerry, in addition to the Mercy University Hospital and Bons Secours Hospital Tralee. CHAIR is currently undergoing a significant programme of change to develop and implement the EuroHeart suite of cardiovascular disease registries in HSE South West and planned national rollout thereafter. EuroHeart is a registry platform for cardiovascular diseases, which has been developed by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It is an IT infrastructure for continuous online registration of high quality patient data, with real-time feedback, supporting continuous improvement of care and outcomes in patients with common cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, EuroHeart facilitates cost-effective safety surveillance of new drugs and devices as well as registry-based randomized controlled trials. The EuroHeart programme has been designed for the benefit of patients, citizens and the planning of healthcare.

Medical Laboratory Aide, University Hospital

The Department of Clinical Microbiology is a consultant led laboratory offering a comprehensive range of diagnostic services in routine Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, infectious Disease Serology and Molecular Diagnostics as well as consultation in microbiology, infectious diseases and antibiotic utilisation and provision of statistical and cumulative data for infectious disease monitoring. The Department provides this service to CUH inpatients and outpatients, to patients in primary and continuing care and for selected tests to associated hospitals in the region. The laboratory is a Health Service Executive (HSE) South installation with links to Medical and Science Faculties at UCC. It also has strong educational links with the MTU Biological Sciences Department. As well as the diagnostic service provided, the laboratory is also involved in teaching both medical science and biomedical science students and is involved in collaborative research work with clinical colleagues. The laboratory is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists for specialist training in Medical Microbiology and maintains a Quality Management System which is accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board against Standard ISO15189:2022. The laboratory is constantly evolving, exploring and adopting new technologies and platforms to address user needs and exceed user expectations. It is expected that all staff would engage with and embrace such new technologies. Operations at the laboratory depend on a rich and fruitful interaction between clerical, scientific, clinical and nursing staff, as well as close links with third level institutions.
