Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

Purpose of the Role: The National Model of Care for Neonatal Services (HSE, 2015) envisaged the opening of an 18-bed NICU in the new children’s hospital staffed by a full nursing team, including ANNPs. These posts will be committed to the development of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at CHI as the service ramps up to the new National Children’s Hospital and expands its nursing workforce. It is a key step in building a team to deliver neonatal intensive care nursing. It is envisaged that by 2024 (prior to the NCH opening), intensive care provision for neonatal patients at CHI will begin transition to the neonatal service. The new children’s hospital forms part of National Model of Care for Paediatric Healthcare Services in Ireland (HSE, 2016), in support of the delivery of safe and appropriate care to paediatric patients from birth. These posts are in support of delivering on the National Model of Care for Neonatal Services (HSE, 2015), which noted an increasing workload in both tertiary neonatal centres and in the paediatric hospitals. The model affirmed that increased and specialist nursing staffing is essential to ensure sustainability in neonatal services in Ireland, while improving safety and quality, improving access, and improving cost-effectiveness. The Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) seeks to incorporate the fundamental concepts of nursing with the enhanced knowledge and clinical skills of the nurse practitioner to provide optimal family centred, evidence-based health care in an endeavour to improve clinical outcomes, cost effectiveness and parent satisfaction. Practising within clinical protocols, the ANNP will work alongside the Neonatal medical team in providing care to premature and complex medical and surgical newborn babies requiring intensive care, high-dependency and ward care under direct or indirect supervision and guidance from consultant neonatologists and senior neonatology registrars. The post-holder will provide clinical advice, support and teaching to the multidisciplinary team. The ANNP will safeguard the provision of high standards of care to the children and their extended families while ensuring that neonatal care provided at CHI is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the hospital. In carrying out these duties, confidentiality surrounding the child’s admission and treatment must be maintained at all times. The PFT lab perform and report on a range of respiratory and sleep diagnostics procedures with scope for expanding our diagnostic capabilities. We currently perform and report on the following tests: · Spirometry & reversibility testing. · Full pulmonary function testing (including Plethysmography). · Methacholine challenge testing. · MIP, MEP & SNIP. · CPET. · Setup, analysis and scoring of limited sleep studies. · Skin Prick allergy testing.
