Logistics Associate Apprentice

Role Overview: The Logistics Associate Apprenticeship programme is due to be launched in Dublin this September. The programme offers participants a two year learning journey where they will be based in DHL Express, Dublin Airport Logistics Park, St. Margaret’s, Co Dublin. As part of the learning process apprentices will complete a level 6 NFQ course in logistics in a TUD (formally DIT). The programme will be split as 4 days in DHL Express, Dublin Airport Logistics Park, St. Margaret’s, Co Dublin and one day in college. This programme is suited for individuals who may be looking to enter the world of logistics or develop their current knowledge of the industry. Key Accountabilities: Understand the End to End Logistics process at DHL Express Ireland Limited Gain exposure to the five key areas of the business including Sales, Customer Services, Network Operations, Finance & Information Technology (IT) Develop understanding of Sales Product and Customer Portfolio’s, sales structures and territories Familiarisation with all aspects of customer service function and understand ICCC culture and NPA and systems approach Participate in daily operational tasks in network operations function including courier & warehouse operations, security and Health & Safety Gain exposure and understanding in terms of compliance with custom duties, controls, tariff, international conventions and agreements Review and screen applications against denied parties and ensure compliance with Department of Transport (DOT) Familiarisation in terms of prohibited and restricted commodities Monitor records of all shipment activities, documenting procedures, guidelines and changes in procedures for reference purposes Support Fleet and Facilities team to ensure audit compliance Participate in daily tasks within Finance function including billing, invoicing, credit control and query handling Create a safe working environment for yourself and other employees by adhering to safety measures to prevent accident and complications that may arise during work. Develop an understanding of the IT function and how this supports the local and global DHL operational network Assisting team with all logistics relevant activities Project support and any other ad hoc tasks as required Learning Outcomes: The Logistics Associate role involves acquiring the knowledge, skills and competence to carry out the core tasks/responsibilities within the transport and logistics industry in order to support the business needs and develop skills to prepare for future career opportunities. Knowledge Specialised knowledge across a variety of areas associated with: Understanding of the Supply Chain with particular focus on the modes of distribution including Air, Road and Sea Understand the role of supply chain management in relation to the overall business improvement process Logistics and supply chain management overview Understand the importance of customer service for logistics and supply chain and implementing its effective management Management (communications, accounting, planning) Understand the competencies required in an international trade & customs environment (Review the role and function of Customs in an era of International Trade, Globalisation, EU Single Market and Brexit) Knowledge of how to set up a distribution network within the demand & supply chain. Skills Ability to use information systems and computers. Ability to apply management techniques to measure performance and make recommendations to improve business performance. The ability to be aware of the changing needs of the customers and how to adapt to these changes. The ability to apply best practice techniques to a range of logistical contexts and situations. Ability to work as part of a team. Recognise the advantages and disadvantages that alternative distribution/warehousing configurations can provide. The ability to understand and approach a range of technical and managerial approaches. Adaptability Customer focused Strong planning and organising skills Self-driven Minimum Entry Requirements: Minimum entry requirements are a grade H7/O6 or above in five leaving certificate (or equivalent) subjects. A minimum of grade O6 must be obtained in English. A minimum of grade O6 or a B2 or above in Foundation level must be obtained in Mathematics. Holders of a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 (or equivalent) in cognate areas (e.g. business, Logistics and Distribution, supply chain management, etc.) can apply for entry onto the programme. Applicants may also be eligible to become apprentices via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL processes require the applicant to provide evidence of appropriate past learning, whether that is certified or experiential learning. In some cases it may be sufficient for the applicant to provide copies of appropriate certificates. In other cases there may be a self-assessment exercise, preparation of a file or ‘portfolio’ of appropriate evidence of learning, an interview, and perhaps a demonstration or assessment task.
