The clinical immunology department has two consultant immunologists, two Specialist Registrars (of which one SpR post will be vacant) and one Clinical Nurse specialist. The post of registrar in clinical immunology is based at University Hospital Galway. The clinical immunology job comprises twice weekly allergy and immunology clinics with Dr Vincent Tormey (Tuesdays am) and Dr Cariosa Lee-Brennan (Thursday pm), and weekly allergy and immunology day ward (Monday am ) in Merlin Park Hospital. At the main allergy and immunology out-patient clinics in UHG, patients attend for investigation of food allergy and anaphylaxis, drug and venom allergy, urticaria / angioedema , rhinitis. Skin prick testing is performed at the clinic. The allergy/immunology day ward in MPUH is for (1) investigation (skin testing, intradermal testing and challenge) of immediate drug allergy, particularly antibiotics and perioperative medications, (2) oral food challenges, and (3) desensitisation to bee and wasp venom Patients are also referred for investigation of recurrent infections, particularly recurring pneumonias and sinusitis to investigate for immune deficiency. There is a nurse lead infusion unit at Merlin park hospital where patients with antibody deficiency attend for regular immunoglobulin infusions. There is an opportunity to learn about immunology laboratory tests, including autoantibodies (ANA, rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP, ANCA, anti-TTG, thyroid peroxidase antibodies), allergen specific IgE tests, immunoglobulins and protein electrophoresis.
