St. Finbarr’s Rehabilitation Unit (SFRU) is a long established post-acute inpatient geriatric rehabilitation unit in Cork city serving Cork city and the wider Cork area. Access to SFRU is via acute hospitals (Cork University Hospital Group & Mercy University Hospital) and community pathways. St Finbarr’s Rehabilitation Unit has 71 inpatient beds. The unit supports the older person following an acute illness or hospital stay with a concurrent change in functional status and aims to return the older person to the best possible health state. The Speech & Language Therapy Department provides care across Cork University Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital, St. Finbarr’s Rehabilitation Unit & Mallow General Hospital. The SLT Department is a dynamic work environment with service delivery provided across a wide range of specialties including Older Persons Rehabilitation, General Medicine, Radiation/Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, Paediatrics, Neonatology etc. It is also a clinical practice site for undergraduates from UCC. Strong interagency working across community, hospitals and agency services takes place with a focus on the ongoing development of integrated care pathways across CHI & other acute hospitals, disability services, educational and community settings. The SLT service is committed to active service user involvement and continues to develop joint initiatives involving service users and key stakeholders in line with HSE policies.
