Postdoctoral Researcher Nxtgenwood: Development Of An Ecosystem For Delivery Next Generation Wood Products, School Natural Sciences, NUI
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term, 30-month position as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the funded project entitled ‘NxtGenWood: Development of an Ecosystem for Delivery of Next Generation Wood Products’ within the Glycoscience Group (PI: Prof. Lokesh Joshi) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Depending on the applicant suitability, we are open to recruiting a more senior researcher part-time for the same time frame (30 months). This position is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and is available from November 2021. As expansion of Irish forestry continues, the economic and employment contribution to the Irish economy will become more significant. The return to the economy has scope for improvement since wood products manufactured in Ireland are of low value, and material waste is high. NxtGenWood is a DAFM-funded research consortium involving TCD, UCD, UCC, UL and NUI Galway which is investigating the development of novel materials and applications of wood waste. The contributing research programme within the Glycoscience Group at NUI Galway encompasses the biological evaluation of wood products as prebiotics for human and ruminant health. Job Description: Working as an integral member of the Glycoscience Group and the NXTGENWOOD consortium, the successful candidate will investigate the biological properties of wood products as potential prebiotics for human and ruminant health. The project will focus on depolymerisation, fractionation and characterisation of wood products, and will assess their biological properties using bacterial and mammalian in vitro models. The successful candidate will also contribute to day to day running of the project and supervision and training of postgraduate and undergraduate students. Duties: Employment permit restrictions apply for this category of post Salary : €38,362 to €50,029 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply). We are open to recruiting a full-time earlier career stage postdoctoral researcher or a more senior researcher on a part-time basis for the same 30-month duration.
