ALL BUS SERVICES have been cancelled for Leinster and Munster tomorrow as the country deals with ongoing severe weather conditions.

The cancellation affects Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann services.

Bus services in the capital have been operating today with some delays but the expected worsening conditions means the decision has been taken to suspend services tomorrow.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the National Emergency Coordination Group.

Schools are also set to close in areas covered by tomorrow’s ‘status red’ warning – which covers Leinster and Munster and stays in place until Friday at noon.

Luas and Irish Rail services will be operating but at a “constrained service”, finishing between 12pm and 2pm.

Met Éireann has issued a red alert snow-ice warning for Munster and Leinster, warning that ‘blizzard-like’ conditions are expected.

“Our services are primarily operating on main roads only due to poor road conditions,” Dublin Bus said in its latest update.

“Customers should be aware that services may also experience delays.”

Bus Éireann said there were “major disruptions across the country due to deteriorating weather conditions”.

Investment of €5m to create the Vaults in the John’s Lane area, which opens in July
A new tourist attraction in Dublin city centre is to create 50 new jobs following a €5 million investment.
The attraction, called the Vaults, will be located in the John’s Lane area of Thomas St and opens in July.
The €5 million is being spent on converting the old Augustinian St John’s National School into a series of theatrical sets with live actor-led performances.
The initiative is being developed by Frontier Entertainment, which is driven by former broadcaster Paul Blanchfield and producer Gerald Heffernan with the creative involvement of playwright Peter Sheridan.
“The show consists of thrilling special effects, dark humour, moments of pure fun and lots of audience participation,” said Frontier Entertainment.
Just over half the jobs will be made up of actors, making the attraction the Republic’s largest employer of full-time performing artists.
The remaining jobs will focus on front of house, food and beverage, retail sales and merchandising assistants, technical specialists, and makeup and wardrobe specialists.
The Vaults will offer up to 30 shows per day depicting scenes and characters from 800 years of Irish history. Each scene is played in a 360-degree theatrical set dressed with props, a range of lighting, and sound and special effects.

Enjoyable and stimulating
Frontier Entertainment chief executive Paul Blanchfield said the aim was to “quickly become the number one thing to do in Dublin with a theatrical attraction”.
“Our research shows people want better experiences, more involvement and the Vaults entertainment model makes this happen in a big way,” he said.
“You will have a wonderful time with your friends and family at the Vaults and in an increasingly distracted mobile device driven world where adults want a more experiential, enjoyable and stimulating escapist experience, we’ve built it to do just that.
“We’ve put together a team of highly skilled professionals in staging and set design to create for guests a stunning walk through journey of real and imagined events in Irish history with a twist.
“We are in a prime location to add to Dublin’s €2 billion tourism and leisure offering where over 1.7 million adults and families attended arts related events last year.”
Mr Blanchfield said the business was based on “rethinking what culturally curious domestic and overseas guests are searching for and receive from Dublin’s current paid attractions”.
“Three years ago, we identified a significant competitive gap in the current menu which we are now about to successfully address,” he said.

New drivers and mechanics required for expansion of services

Bus Éireann have today announced a campaign to recruit almost 200 new staff for roles across the country.
This includes 190 new driver positions and additional mechanic jobs, to service the ongoing expansion of the national network.

These roles will be required in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Mayo, Waterford, Wicklow, Navan, Drogheda, Limerick and west Clare. Suitable candidates are being sought across Ireland and abroad. The recruitment campaign includes radio, digital and print adverts and commences today [May 10th].

The new staff positions are required for an expansion and enhancement of services on a number of Bus Éireann routes nationwide under contract to the National Transport Authority (NTA), and some additional enhancement of services on Expressway routes.
These service enhancements are planned for regional city networks, town services and several Expressway intercity routes.

This service expansion will be introduced over the next four to six months.

Bus Éireann CEO Ray Hernan said he was delighted to announce such a significant number of new roles:

“After a challenging few years at the company, it is great to move into a new growth phase. Bus Éireann is hiring 190 new drivers Nationwide & 10 Mechanics

Fancy becoming a taxi driver? Now’s your chance.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) in Ireland is looking to recruit 1,600 taxi drivers as part of a major recruitment drive this year.

The NTA says it wants to attract customer-centric women and men with a desire to work for themselves and provide positive taxi experiences to the travelling public.

800 new taxi drivers were recruited by the NTA in 2017, a figure it is looking to double in 2018 to add to the 26,000 people currently licensed to drive a taxi in Ireland.

NTA CEO Anne Graham said: “There are about 26,000 drivers licenced to drive a Small Public Service Vehicle in Ireland.

“That might sound like a lot, but they are not all available all of the time, which means there can be shortages at certain periods particularly at peak hours and weekend nights.

“Last year we recruited about 800 new drivers into the sector, and with this campaign, we would like to double that in 2018.”

An advertising campaign will be rolled out across broadcast, online and print media starting on Monday, 26 February; a clean driving licence is all that’s needed to apply.

What Happens Next;

Your application will be processed by An Garda Síochána. The process includes an assessment of you as a suitable person to hold an SPSV driver licence (vetting). This may take up to twelve weeks to complete, occasionally longer depending on the checks to be completed. All queries in relation to your application should be directed to An Garda Síochána as the SPSV Driver Licensing authority.

If your application is successful, An Garda Síochána will issue you with a paper SPSV driver licence and they will inform NTA. We then issue you with the secure driver identification cards that you are required to keep with you at all times while you are operating as an SPSV driver.

If you are issued with an SPSV driver licence, you are entitled to drive any of the categories of SPSV (taxi, hackney or limousine). The vehicle you drive must be licensed as an SPSV.

National Transport Authority Recruiting 1,600 New Taxi Drivers

Aircraft maintenance provider Dublin Aerospace has created more than 100 full-time engineering and support positions in the capital.

Dublin Aerospace has revealed that it intends to take on 102 new employees over the next three years.

The intention was expressed at a media event at Dublin Airport today, where the firm also expressed its aim to double its turnover by 2023.

At the event, Michael Tyrrell, CEO explained that the 48 hires have already been recruited this quarter “with a variety of skill sets including aircraft engineers, avionics technicians, structures &amp; composite technicians , painters and aircraft operatives.”

Graduates of the Dublin Aerospace apprenticeship &amp; trainee programmes accepted 17 of these positions. The company offers five different programmes in conjunction with SOLAS, the agency formerly known as FÁS, and intends to take on approximatively 35 additional employees through these programmes.

An Tánaiste and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Frances Fitzgerald TD welcomed the development, and said: “It is testament to the vision of the team and the company’s highly skilled and dedicated staff that Dublin Aerospace is growing so confidently.”

“The aviation sector is extremely important for Ireland, contributing more than €4 billion to the economy and my department, through Enterprise Ireland, continue to support Dublin Aerospace’stellar growth.”

In 2009, SR Technics’s Dublin operation closed its doors, and with it cut more than 1,000 jobs. Dublin Aerospace was founded around that time by former Ryanair executive Conor McCarthy, who bought most of SR Technics’s assets and set up shop at the former SR Technics site.

The facility is now 20,000 square metres in size and stretches over Hangars 1, 4 and 5 at Dublin Airport. It can handle approximately 70 aircrafts per annum.

The maintenace, repairs and overhauls service provider primarily focuses on landing gear services, aircraft overhaul and maintenance of auxillary power units (APUs).

Julie Sinnamon, Enterprise Ireland CEO, said of the news: “Dublin Aerospace is a very important service provider to the global aviation industry. Having its base at Dublin Airport is of critical importance, servicing its international client base and delivering high value jobs to Ireland.”

Dublin Aerospace announces more than 100 new hires

200 jobs are to be created by a US-owned medical supplies company based in Co Longford.

Finesse Medical was set up in 2004 and produces products for woundcare and skin treatment, including skin barrier films and protection creams, and silicone and polyurethane foam wound dressings.

The announcement is linked to the firm&#39;s multi-million euro takeover last year by New York-listed Avery Dennison Corporation.

January 2018:  Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, TD, has launched an industry-led National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme that will provide young aspiring chefs across Ireland with a two–year formal education and training programme to begin their careers as professional chefs. The programme, the only one of its kind in the country, is supported by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI), the Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI), Euro-toques Ireland, Catering Management Association of Ireland (CMAI), Fáilte Ireland, SOLAS, Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and Institutes of Technology (IOTs). Over 110 places will be available initially and to people aged over 16 years, existing kitchen staff and anyone else who wishes to gain an internationally recognised qualification.

Launching the apprenticeship programme, Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, TD, said, “I am delighted to launch the new Commis Chef Apprenticeship. This new national apprenticeship offers a welcome pathway to a career in the hospitality sector, where apprentices will learn critical skills to succeed in their field. One of the greatest casualties of the recession were apprenticeships. Registrations collapsed and fell by over 80% during the period. I am keen during my time as Minister to now, not only reverse this trend and rebuild traditional pathways but to significantly expand apprenticeships into new industries. I believe that expanding the range of pathways available to people to achieve their career goals is key to fulfilling our ambition to be the best in Europe by 2026. This Government is committed to more than doubling the number of new apprentices registered to 9,000 by 2020 and expanding further into new areas. Budget 2018 allocated €122m to apprenticeship training, an increase of almost 24% to deliver on this goal.”

Pat O&#39;Doherty, Chair of the Apprenticeship Council and ESB Chief Executive, said: “The Commis Chef programme is an important addition to the growing number of apprenticeship opportunities that will be available in Ireland. It is an excellent example of how the continued expansion of the apprenticeship system can help address ongoing and future skills needs, enabling young people to optimise their potential while creating a highly skilled workforce that, in turn, will help contribute to the continuous improvement of standards.”

The programme was launched at a reception in Dublin, which was attended by representatives of the hospitality and tourism industry as well as the seven Education and Training Boards involved in delivering the educational aspects of the programme. Mr Tim Fenn, Chair of the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Consortium Steering Group and Chief Executive, Irish Hotels Federation, said, “Professionally trained chefs with a passion for their work are incredibly important to the success of Ireland’s tourism and hospitality industry which relies heavily on the consistent delivery of a quality product. This programme will help add to the existing pool of culinary talent in Ireland’s hospitality industry, while also nurturing the budding chefs of the future.”

Mr Fenn added: “One of the key features of the programme is the “earn and learn” opportunity it offers. This enables young people, who may not necessarily want to commit to a full time college course, to gain an internationally recognised qualification, while getting valuable on the job experience. President of the Restaurant Association of Ireland, Liam Edwards said “we are delighted to support this fantastic initiative, which will no doubt be a huge support in attracting apprentices into our growing sector over the coming years.”

Fáilte Ireland’s Director of Commercial Development, Paul Keeley today emphasised: “A career in hospitality can be a passport to a world of opportunities and we in Fáilte Ireland have been very happy to work with our industry partners and Solas to develop this practical and effective learning option. As tourism goes from strength to strength, we will need more and more skilled workers and it is very encouraging to see all the relevant actors in the sector coming together to introduce important interventions like this.”

The structured two-year education and training programme incorporates periods of off-the-job knowledge and skills development in a college or centre with work-based knowledge and skills development in an approved hotel or restaurant kitchen. Apprentices will develop the theory, science and culinary skills in a college or education and training centre and put these skills into practice under the mentorship of qualified and experienced chefs in the kitchens of SOLAS approved hotels and restaurants.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, newly qualified Commis Chefs will receive a QQI Level 6 Major Award - Advanced Certificate in Culinary Arts. They will also be eligible to progress to the Chef de Partie Apprenticeship at QQI level 7.

The programme will be delivered from seven Education and Training Boards (ETBs) with up to 16 places available on each course:

National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme Launched

The Naughton Foundation Scholarship scheme is reminding leaving cert students that the closing date for applications for this year’s scholarships is fast approaching.

The closing date for receipt of application forms for The Naughton Foundation Scholarship is 5:30pm on Friday, 18th May 2018 and students from all 26 counties are eligible to apply. There will be one guaranteed scholarship for each of the 26 participating counties and five additional scholarships allocated.

Students are invited to apply if they are currently attending secondary schools in County Mayo, and if they are studying two or more of the following subjects- physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, mathematics and applied mathematics.

Aaron Hannon, St. Muredach’s College, Ballina was one of the 2017 recipients from County Mayo and is now studying Engineering at Trinity College. Michael Mitchell, St. Gerard’s College, Castlebar was also awarded a scholarship in 2017 and is now studying Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials at Trinity College.

Each Naughton Scholarship is valued at €20,000 i.e. €5,000 for each year of the student’s third-level course for a student studying science, engineering, maths or technology in any publicly funded university or third-level institution in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. The school of each winner is also awarded €1,000.

Closing date approaching for 2018 Naughton Foundation Scholarships

The Galway-founded company is looking for 400 new staff.
FAST-FOOD CHAIN SUPERMAC’S has announced plans to open six new outlets by the middle of this year with a further three branches in the planning process.

The company – which currently employs more than 2,700 people – said it hopes to recruit 400 new staff as a result of the expansion.

Most of the new outlets will be located in Cork, with branches due to open in Ballyvollane, Glanmire and Bandon Road in Cork City.

New Supermac’s stores are also set to open in Balbriggan, Naas and Donegal Town, which will bring the total number of outlets nationwide to 114.

The firm has also submitted plans to open new units in Waterford and Letterkenny. A Barack Obama Plaza-style development in Longford Town is also in the planning pipeline.

Commenting on today’s jobs announcement, Supermac’s managing director Pat McDonagh said the company is looking for workers to take up roles as store managers, assistant managers and catering assistants.

“Some of the stores that are scheduled to open will be franchised operations and we are looking for people that want a career; people that will stay with us and develop with us,” he said.


Four decades

Supermac’s was founded 40 years ago this year, with the first branch opening in Ballinasloe, Co Galway. The company also operates the Papa John’s Pizza and SuperSubs brands within a number of its outlets.

The business is owned by Pat McDonagh and his wife, Una. In addition to Supermac’s, McDonagh owns a number of motorway petrol stations including the Barack Obama Plaza in Monegall, Co Offaly.

He also has a stake in several hotels, including Castletroy Park Hotel in Limerick, Loughrea Hotel &amp; Spa in Galway and the Charleville Park Hotel in Cork.

According to Supermac’s most recent set of accounts, its <a href="https://fora.ie/supermacs-sales-profits-3724802-Nov2017/">2016 sales increased by more than €20 million</a> to €136 million. It recorded a profit of €13 million for the year, a €1.4 million increase on 2015′s figure.

Despite its success in Ireland, the company’s growth plans for mainland Europe and Australia have been slowed down by American fast-food colossus McDonald’s.

The US company filed a 41-page complaint with the EU’s Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market about Supermac’s pending bid for a Europe-wide trademark.

In its decision, the EU unit partially upheld McDonald’s complaint and rejected Supermac’s trademark application.

Big forest, huge opportunity - Center Parc Careers Update

An open casting call for <a href="https://www.tipperarystar.ie/">local</a> actors for a new RTE <a href="https://www.tipperarystar.ie/section/400/what-s-on">short film</a> takes place in <a href="https://www.tipperarystar.ie/section/630/thurles">Thurles</a> later this month.

Written by local writer Matthew Roche, &#39;Out&#39; is the story of a young man who feels trapped by his home situation and desperate to escape the place he grew up in, makes a terrible decision.

While the location is yet to be confirmed, the Tipperary Star understands that the film will be shot on location in Thurles.

The title roles call for a male aged between 18 to 30 and a female lead aged between 40 and 50. The film will also require a number of supporting characters including a male and female in their 60&#39;s to play a couple, and a male aged between 30 to 40. There will also be a number of roles for extras.

The film will premiere as part of RTÉ’s ‘Storyland’ series and will be directed by Steve Kenny.

Auditions will take place on Monday, May 7 at The McEvoy Suite in the Anner Hotel from 10am to 3pm and time slots will be allocated to each actor. All lead roles will be paid.

Daryl (18)
Daryl is smart, did well at school, and has a select group of close friends. He’s a man of few words. He had to drop out of college and return home to his small town to help his mother take care of his severely disabled brother. He works as trainee painter &amp; decorator for some extra money, but he hates it. Daryl is desperate to leave his small-town life behind but feels trapped by circumstance.

Edel (40&#39;s)
Edel is a single mother of two now-adult children. Nearly all her time and energy goes into taking care of her eldest son, James who is severely mentally and physically disabled. She leads a stressful existence and although she’s often overwhelmed, she rarely complains. Sometimes Edel forgets she even has another son in Daryl and not a live-in carer.

Eoghan (27)
To call Eoghan &quot;a maneen&quot; would be an understatement. He’s fun to be around at times but often acts without thinking. Eoghan dropped out of school after his junior cert &amp; found himself a trade but now he makes his money in &#39;other ways&#39;. He lives in an old caravan in the back garden of his elderly parent&#39;s home and unlike Daryl, he loves his life in the small town where he’s from. Eoghan is Edel&#39;s younger brother and Daryl and James&#39;s uncle

James (23)
James has been mentally and physically disabled since birth. He is confined to a wheelchair and is totally dependent on his mother and younger brother.
*Note: We are looking for an actor with a background in physical performance for this role.*

Kevin (40&#39;s)
Owns a painting and decorating business and has a small team of workers. Has a ‘Time is money’ mentality and believes that he must keep his employees on a tight leash to get the best results. He’s a straight-forward guy who values his loyal clients.

Ritchie (30&#39;s)
Has a chip on his shoulder and takes it out on those around him who he views as weaker than him. But he&#39;s excellent at his job when he puts his mind to it.

Bourke (50+)
Owns a small local shop. He’s sick and tired of having his small business broken in to so he decides to take matters into his own hands.

Grandparents (60+)
Daryl&#39;s grandparents, Eoghan&#39;s parents. Retired. Modest type. Understated.

Tipperary actors wanted for new RTE ‘Storyland’ series

The soft drink company says 43 of the jobs will move to Ballina, with some employees at the concentrate manufacturing site having the option to transfer.



Production at the Athy site is due to wind down from September, with the full closure due by December next year.



The General Manager of Athy International Concentrates, Manqoba Khumalo said: “It is with regret that we are announcing the proposedclosure of the Coca-Cola plant in Athy. The site has been in operation for 45 years, with Coca-Cola acquiring the plant in 2000. Over that time, employees have made a very valuable contribution to Coca-Cola’s international business.

“If the transfer goes ahead and the Athy plant closes, in addition to a redundancy package, the Company will be providing supports including: financial advice, job search and re-training for the employees affected. We also have enjoyed an extremely positive relationship with the local community and we will continue to engage with them on community initiatives that will benefit the town for the long term.”

Coca-Cola to close Kildare plant with the loss of 82 jobs

LinkedIn has launched a pilot programme aimed at helping people return to the workplace.






The initiative will initially create 10 jobs at LinkedIn’s EMEA headquarters in Dublin across a number of areas including sales, global customer operations and talent acquisition.




The professional network site chose Dublin to launch the programme – Returnin – which will focus on assisting people who have taken a career break to look after children, or care for family members, in returning to work.

Under the programme, LinkedIn will offer returning professionals additional training, an extended on-boarding period, and the provision of ongoing mentoring to ensure that participants make a seamless transition back into the workforce.




When asked if the initiative was something that the Government should be carrying out, Sharon McCooey, head of LinkedIn in Ireland, told the Irish Independent that the initiative was a talent programme, rather than a corporate social responsibility undertaking.




“This is a talent programme, I see a pool of talent out there that don’t know how to get back into the workplace and I really see this as a way of developing talent,” Ms McCooey said.

While the programme has just commenced, Ms McCooey said that she “definitely” sees it being extended to people who have taken career breaks for reasons other than to act as carers.




The most recent data from the Central Statistics Office shows that there are just over 195,000 carers in Ireland, with female carers compromising over 60pc of the total.

Multiple Jobs At LinkedIn For People who took Career Break

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said Ireland will have to hire about 1,000 new customs and veterinary inspectors by 2021 to prepare our ports and airports for Brexit.

Speaking after a Cabinet meeting at Derrynane in Co Kerry, he said that &quot;with growing uncertainty&quot; over whether British Prime Minister Theresa May will get a withdrawal agreement through Westminster, Ireland needs to &quot;up our preparations when it comes to Brexit.&quot;

He said this includes preparing Irish ports and airports for a change in the rules of trade wast-west between Britain and Ireland in January 2021.

&quot;That involves preparing for and hiring veterinary inspectors to carry out sanitary checks on agricultural products and plant-based products coming in from Britain and also customs inspectors,&quot; he said.

&quot;We estimate we will have to hire about 1,000 customs and veterinary inspectors to prepare our ports and airports for Brexit.&quot;

He added: &quot;In the unlikely event of a no-deal Brexit next March, of course it will not be possible to have 1,000 people in place for then but we will make contingency arrangements in the event that might arise.&quot;

However, he said that the main scenario the Government is preparing for is one in which agreement is reached at October’s Brexit summit.

He added that the Government was also preparing for a situation where &quot;there is a transition period running until the end of 2020, and there is a backstop assuring us that there will be no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.&quot;

&quot;That&#39;s the central case that we are planning for. But of course behind that we have to prepare for other scenarios like a no deal Brexit,&quot; he added.

The Government has also increased resources for Irish diplomats overseas and for Bord Bia to open up new markets around the world for Irish farmers, he said.

Mr Varadkar said €450 million has been set aside for low-interest loans for businesses and the agri-food sector to allow them be prepared for Brexit.

It is understoof the Cabinet discussed Brexit for more than two hours at the meeting in Co Kerry.

The Government cannot become complacent about the risk to more than 650 jobs at Aughinish Alumina in Limerick even though fears are easing about the Trump Administration’s targeting of its Russian owner Rusal.

That is according to Limerick TD, Niall Collins who was speaking as the White House moved to further soften its stance against Rusal, whose majority owner Oleg Deripaska was accused of having too close ties to the Kremlin.

Some 450 jobs and more than 200 agency roles were under threat at Aughinish, as sanctions imposed on Mr Deripaska’s companies played havoc with metal markets over the past number of weeks.

Shares in Rusal plummeted as sanctions sent the entire aluminium industry scrambling to restore supply chains. Rusal’s refining operations, which stretch from Aughinish to Jamaica, are a vital cog in a global supply chain.

Global mining firm Rio Tinto has plants in Dunkirk, France, and Iceland that use the Irish alumina, and Liberty House Group’s Scottish smelter also depends on the site.



Rio Tinto, which buys and sells to Rusal and jointly owns an alumina refinery in Australia, said last month it would declare force majeure on some contracts, which allows a firm not to deliver on contracts due to circumstances outside its control.

An amendment by the US Treasury to its Russian sanctions programme may greatly reduce the restrictions on Rusal, Rio Tinto chief executive Jean Sebastien Jacques said yesterday.

The US Treasury this week gave investors an additional month to divest or transfer their holdings in sanctions targets, including Rusal. Shares in Rusal have begun to recover since the crisis saw it lose more than half its value. They were up more than 8% yesterday. The US has said previously it would consider lifting sanctions if Mr Deripaska, who holds a 48% stake in Rusal, ceded control of the firm. Mr Deripaska has agreed to cut his shareholdings.

Under the latest US Treasury amendment, the deadline to divest financial holdings in sanctions targets would be extended to June 6 from May 7.

Mr Collins said the new deadline gave “time and space” for Rusal to get its house in order, thereby reducing the worry among the Limerick-based workers, who were inadvertently caught up in a diplomatic spat that had little to do with them.

“The best case scenario is for Mr Deripaska to divest his interest. However the Government cannot rest on its laurels and must keep the dialogue open to ensure the jobs, which are vital for the area, are preserved,” he said.
