Peter McVerry Trust and DCU recently conducted a research study of 51 young homeless men’s experiences of the education system in an effort to understand and improve young people’s educational experiences and reduce the risks of homelessness in the future.Following the study they have produced a fantastic report called Educational Gaps and Future Solutions, which sets out seven key recommendations.Key findings included:- A significant deterioration in the interviewees’ experiences of education following their transition from primary to secondary school.- Rates of suspension and expulsion from school significantly higher than the national average, with 55% of participants having experienced reduced access to education via suspension, rolling suspension or expulsion.- 68% indicated that they had experienced ‘traumatic childhood events’.- 79% of participants interested in further education or training.Sarah Murphy, lead author and Research Associate with the Educational Disadvantage Centre, DCU Institute of Education, said: “This report reveals a range of preventable system failures in the Irish education system that are still ongoing today. These failures increase the risk of exclusion from the system and participation in society with knock-on impacts that heighten the risks of homelessness.The seven key recommendations of this report are as follows;To provide a distinct funding strand for adequate emotional counselling and/or therapeutic supports in and around schools to support children and young people experiencing trauma and adverse childhood experiences to support the mental health needs of these vulnerable students.To provide additional Multidisciplinary Team Supports in and around schools to provide alternatives to suspension and expulsion.To provide and lead a strategic commitment to enhanced focus on conflict resolution skills for secondary teaching in Initial Teacher Education and continuing professional development to upskill schools in responding to children’s social, emotional and behavioural needs.To establish a distinct funding strand to develop Community Lifelong Learning Centres, integrated with Multidisciplinary Teams as onestop-shops for meeting diverse holistic educational needs, including for young people at risk of, or experiencing homelessness.To establish an Interdepartmental National Expert Advisory Group to develop a National Strategic Action Plan for meeting the holistic educational needs of children and young people in care.To explore ways of providing accommodation for young men which address the heterogeneity of this
group and is conducive to studying and maintaining employment, as well as the provision of education and training opportunities where appropriate.To increase focus on Social, Personal, Health Education (SPHE), in particular social and emotional development education, meaningful drug education and life skills.To explore ways of providing accommodation for young men which address the heterogeneity of this
group and is conducive to studying and maintaining employment, as well as the provision of education and training opportunities where appropriate.<h2>More about the Peter McVerry Trust</h2>Apart from running many homeless services the Peter McVerry has a number of training initiatives for young people, In 2019 Peter McVerry Trust took on the operations of the Carline Learning Centre in Clondalkin, West Dublin. This centre works with around 30 young people each academic year to support them to obtain their Junior Certificate. The vast majority of these young people have been excluded from mainstream school systems. In Moyross, Limerick, Peter McVerry Trust funds the Moyross Youth Academy to offer carpentry courses for long term unemployed young people from the area. The funding is provided for a woodwork tutor and Peter McVerry Trust buys the furniture made by the young people for use across their social housing units.The Peter McVerry Trust works with and provides funding to the Belvedere Youth Club in Dublin 1.
The funding is focused on the provision of an IT education project for young people who access the youth club’s services and who come from the immediate environs of Dublin’s north inner city. As part of their work to support young people in the education system, Peter McVerry Trust is currently funding trauma counselling sessions for students at two schools in Dublin. This counselling was developed as a homelessness prevention measure as these schools had seen high number of past pupils access their homeless services.In conjunction with the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), the Trust also provides an online learning platform which offers a flexible, accessible and cost-effective means of learning and accreditation at QQI Levels 2 &amp; 3. This platform is called writeon.ie.
Peter McVerry Trust currently offers NALA’s online education platform across their Supported Temporary Accommodation Services, Family Hubs and Housing with Support Services, throughout the four Dublin Local Authority areas, Louth, Limerick and Kildare. Through their ongoing engagement with schools in Dublin we are funding a breakfast club at a DEIS school in Dublin. This ensures that children attending that school start the day with a nutritious and proper breakfast. The Peter McVerry Trust is currently bringing forward a number of employment activation programmes for people in homeless and housing services. These programmes are located in Dublin, Kildare and Limerick. The programmes will aid people’s ability to secure and retain employment in areas such as construction, hospitality and tourism, IT and retail. Soon he gained his personal track safety qualification and he is now also undertaking groundwork labouring. Reports back show that Peter has proved to be a very hard worker. He struggled initially with group dynamics and needed some extra support which the programme was able to provide him with, he has now managed to settle in really well.Even though Peter is now working full time, he is still on day release from prison, so he’s saving money to help secure accommodation after his release and is starting to rebuild lost relationships with his family. Peter says: “I’m really grateful to have been given this chance to get my life back on track.”VGC have also linked up with charities and social enterprise partners - including Shaw Trust, Bounce Back, Key4Life, Mind the Gap and A Fairer Chance - to understand the issues facing deprived communities.The company are also one of many companies in the UK who have joined the ‘Ban the Box Campaign’ that asks employers to remove the tick box from job application forms asking about unspent criminal convictions. <h1></h1><h2>Self-employed people will now be able to access social welfare payments such as jobseekers allowance as long as they contribute enough PRSI payments under the Jobseekers Bill that passed through the houses of the Oireachtas yesterday.</h2><h1></h1><h2>The Bill will now go before President Michael D Higgins where it will be officially signed into law and is expected to come into force fully in November.</h2>Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty said in a statement: “When the economy crashed in 2008, many suffered. Self-employed traders such as plumbers, electricians and painters all around the country suddenly found themselves with no work and with very little support from the State.“This new scheme will rectify that situation and create more fairness in our system of supports for those who create jobs for themselves and others.”&lt;ad&gt;Details of the Bill were announced back in April as follows; The Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty T.D. announced the introduction of a new social insurance benefit scheme for the self-employed from this November. The new scheme of Jobseekers Benefit (Self-Employed) will support those who lose their self-employment and are covered by social insurance. This new initiative will provide assurance to people setting up or running their own business that the State is there to support them if their efforts to create employment and an income for their families and employees suffer as a consequence of their business ceasing. Arrangements are currently underway in the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to ensure the necessary legislation is in place for the new scheme and that the administrative and technical solutions are in place in advance of November for the operation of this scheme.&lt;ad&gt;Speaking on the importance of the scheme, Minister Doherty said:“This new benefit supports the Government’s aim of creating a supportive environment for entrepreneurship, including providing an income safety net to employees and self-employed alike. This Government has sought to encourage enterprise and, particularly, has sought to introduce a new deal for the self-employed when it comes to their access to benefits. “We have already extended Treatment Benefits and Invalidity Pension to the self-employed in recent years to ensure that they reach some parity with employees in the benefits they can access from the social insurance system. The introduction of a new Jobseeker’s Benefit scheme for the self-employed represents the next step in the Government’s work to extend PRSI benefits and will provide an income safety net to thousands of small and medium businesses throughout the country.” It is estimated that up to 6,500 individuals could benefit from this support at any point in time in a full year. &lt;ad&gt;Under the scheme applicants will have access to the full range of employment supports available to other jobseekers such as referral to group information sessions, one to one interviews and subsequent caseworker support.<ul><li>This is a new statutory social insurance benefit scheme for the self-employed</li><li>The key objective of the new Jobseeker’s Benefit scheme for the Self Employed is to provide a social insurance support to self-employed contributors whose business has ceased</li><li>Applicants will have to satisfy a PRSI contribution condition</li><li>Self-employed persons who do not have sufficient PRSI contributions will continue to be able to apply for jobseekers allowance which is a social assistance means tested scheme</li><li>Drafting of the necessary legislation has commenced for the new scheme to be available from November 2019</li><li>The payment rates for this scheme are the same as the Jobseeker’s Benefit scheme, as follows:</li></ul>&lt;ad&gt;Maximum Personal Rate €203.00Maximum Increase for a Qualified Adult €134.70Maximum Increase for a Qualified Child (Under 12) €34.00Maximum Increase for a Qualified Child (12 and Over) €37.00The new benefit will be paid for 9 months for people with 260 or more self-employment PRSI contributions paid. It will be paid for 6 months for people with fewer than 260 self–employment PRSI contributions paid (same as current Jobseeker’s Benefit scheme).

Liberty Insurance Announce 120 New Jobs For Cavan

Consulting firm EY is to create 600 new jobs across its network of 10 Irish offices over the next year in a move that will bring total headcount locally to nearly 3,700 people.  Some 333 of the new roles will be based across the firm’s two Dublin offices with a further 136 in Belfast. Two additional weeks of paid leave will be available for each parent of a child who is born, or adopted, from 1 November 2019.
The Irish government estimates that nearly 60,000 people per year will be able to avail of the new legislation that is being brought in.The Bill was published this past weekend by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan, Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty and Minister of State with responsibility for Equality, David Stanton.

Flanagan said on the new legislation: “Having a new baby is a magical time, but it can also be very challenging. We want to support parents and help give them more opportunities to spend time with their children.”

Speaking on the law passed on parental leave, Regina Doherty said: “This payment is in addition to existing maternity, paternity and adoptive leave entitlements. It will provide working parents with a further opportunity to spend more time with their new baby during its first year which is of particular importance,” she stated.

Minister of State with responsibility for Equality, David Stanton mentioned that the government intends to increase the paid leave available to new parents over time.

Northern Ireland’s growing cybersecurity scene has received another boost as MetaCompliance announces a spate of new roles and they&#39;re hiring right now!MetaCompliance, a company that develops cloud software for the cybersecurity and compliance sectors, has announced that it will invest more than £4.5m and create 70 jobs at its technology hub in Derry, Northern Ireland, to bolster its efforts to grow business in new markets in the US and Europe.The new roles will also reportedly help develop the firm’s foray into the cybersecurity learning market via cloud-based solutions.&lt;ad&gt;Invest NI has offered the firm almost £700,000 to support the new roles and the company’s market development.
