Are you willing to go above and beyond when it comes to doing additional tasks, even when it&#39;s outside your job description, or would you reply “it’s not my job”? Such a small little phrase, but it can be “career limiting” and have negative repercussions, if you regularly refuse to do work outside your remit. Personally, I’ve always taken on additional duties when possible, even if they&#39;re outside my job description. Of course, only if I had the capacity and ability to successfully complete the tasks. I’ve no doubt that my flexibility paid off in the end and served me well when it came to promotions.But let’s be clear here. I’m not saying you should never refuse additional work. You definitely need to be able to say NO as well. Having the confidence to refuse additional work is a strength if you have a genuine reason why you can’t do it, but it’s important that you approach the matter diplomatically and have a positive discussion with the parties involved. It&#39;s important to give valid reasons why you cannot accept the additional workload. So, on a different note, what if you see a problem or something that needs urgent attention at work and it&#39;s &quot;not your job&quot;? Personally I believe it&#39;s everyone&#39;s responsibility to ensure that urgent matters are dealt with efficiently and effectively to reduce damage. At the very least we should report the issue to the appropriate team. If it’s a dangerous situation you will also need to ensure that measures are taken to reduce danger, to protect other people and business equipment and property. “Doing nothing” is not an option and you should never assume that someone else will address the problem just because you’re too busy “doing your own job”.Here’s a great little story about this very situation;This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. by Ellen Tannam , Silicon RepublicIDA Ireland has unveiled its results for 2018, highlighting the effects of Brexit on the Irish economy.IDA Ireland and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys, TD, have today announced that employment levels in IDA client companies have reached 229,057.IDA Ireland’s performance has exceeded Government targets contained in its strategy for 2015 to 2019.From regional growth to the effects of Brexit, the report outlines the agency response to changing global trends. Notably, 58pc of employment in IDA companies was outside of Dublin in 2018, which is the highest number of people employed by IDA clients in the history of the organisation.<h2>Brexit benefits</h2>A substantial number of Brexit-related investments were also secured in 2018, with 55 firms approved for investment, bringing with them more than 4,500 associated jobs. This strategy is likely to be continued by the IDA and Government, showing Ireland as a stable investment climate in an increasingly chaotic wider environment.Firms such as Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Barclays are among those that declared a new or expanded presence for Ireland in 2018, as the Brexit fallout continues to accumulate.Humphreys said: “The IDA’s record results for 2018 underline how strongly Ireland continues to perform when it comes to attracting FDI.”<h2>FDI gains in 2018</h2>Humphreys emphasised the progress made in areas outside of Ireland’s main cities, with every region seeing employment gains in the last year. She added: “Our ongoing efforts to grow and sustain FDI here are complemented by other actions we are taking to improve the capacity and resilience of enterprise in Ireland.”CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan, said: “FDI continues to drive the economy with strong employment growth at 7pc, compared to [the] national average of 3pc in 2018. FDI exports experienced growth of 10pc and an increase of 8pc in the amount spent in the Irish economy on payroll, materials and services – this now stands at over €19.2bn.”He added that IDA client companies account for an estimated two-thirds of corporation tax in Ireland.In 2018, total jobs at IDA client firms stood at 229,057, compared to 210,443 at the end of 2017. I know ‘new year, new you’ can be a little clichéd, but the beginning of the year really is a great time to get into a good mindset.While I’m a firm believer in setting goals at any time of the year, I must admit that the new year is one of the strongest times to set yourself up for career success.After all, you’ve more than likely had a nice break over the holiday season and you’ve come back refreshed and ready to organise the year ahead. If you haven’t already made some New Year’s resolutions to improve your career success, check out a few lessons I learned last year and take part in some ready-made goals.Once your goals are set up, it’s time to get into a positive mindset that will help you achieve career success.<h2>Recognise your current mindset</h2>In order to create a positive mindset, you will first need to ask yourself what your voice normally says when you approach tasks. When you’re taking on a challenge, does a little voice inside your head say, ‘Are you sure you can do this?’If you have an occasional negative mindset that plants doubt in your mind about your abilities, the first step to changing that voice of doubt is recognising it.<h2>Start talking back</h2>If the first step is recognising and identifying the voice of doubt, the second step is knowing how to answer back. In order to start nurturing a more positive mindset, you’ll need to directly address the mindset you already have and respond to it. It’s not enough to simply ignore it because while you think you’re not paying it any attention, your subconscious is lapping it up.When your inner voice tries to plant doubt, have an answer for it. Tell yourself why you can do this. Remind yourself why you shouldn’t doubt your own abilities.<h2>Look at what you’ve learned</h2>A negative mindset is usually a dab hand at throwing previous failures to the forefront of your mind to remind you why you can’t do things, but it’s important for you to realise that it’s quite the opposite. As part of answering those negative thoughts about failure, you should recognise the mistakes and failures, and acknowledge what you’ve learned from them and how making the mistakes have benefited you in the long run.Equally, it’s important to reflect on your achievements as well as learn from your mistakes. Before you write down your goals for the year ahead, write down everything you’re proud of doing last year to feed your positive mindset.<h2>Challenge yourself with actions</h2>As the old adage goes, practice makes perfect. Therefore, the best way to exercise your new positive mindset is to challenge yourself. Create goals for yourself throughout the year. There should be a mixture of small, manageable goals and long-term goals that you can spend the entire year chipping away at.Each of these goals and challenges will be a good exercise for you to fight with your former negative mindset and create a more positive one.<h2>Be flexible with your goals</h2>Not everything will go to plan all the time, but don’t let failures, struggles or knock-backs shake your new positive mindset. Remember what we said about making mistakes? There’s a lesson in everything you do, so don’t let them be an excuse to give up.Furthermore, if you’ve created arbitrary deadlines, or you’ve realised halfway through that a particular goal is a little unrealistic, move the goalposts. They’re your goals, after all.<h2>Re-evaluate yourself often</h2>Many people can be guilty of waiting for an annual performance review to evaluate their work. As part of your new positive mindset, it’s important to evaluate your own performance often. However, you should not simply be evaluating your performance based on what your employer’s goals are. You should look at your personal goals for career success.You should also check in with your mindset, your work-life balance and your mental health while you’re at it. Career success is not just about doing well at work.<h2>Be kind to yourself</h2>Self-talk is one of the most important parts of keeping your mindset in a positive space. You started these steps by recognising your own voice and talking back to it in a more positive way. Find a quiet place, where you will not be disturbed and relax - take deep breaths in and out, focusing on the sound of your breathing in and out.6. HOT TOWEL SCRUBTo improve your lymphatic system and increase circulation there&#39;s nothing like a good hot towel scrub or a body brush. Do it before or after you bath or shower. Focus on one part of your body at a time scrubbing in circular motions. 7. GO GLUTEN, DIARY, SUGAR, ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE FREE FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARYThis might sound a bit extreme, but these foods are inflammatory and load up the liver, resulting in a toxic build up and if you give them up for a month you will feel brand new in just a few weeks. Remote Workers Are Outperforming Office Workers - Here's Why

Brexit contributed to almost 190,000 Irish passport applications being received from the UK in 2018, in a record-breaking year for the Passport Service.The number of applications from England, Scotland and Wales increased by 22 per cent to 98,544, when compared with 2017, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. This accounted for 12 per cent of the 855,283 passport applications in 2018.The number of Northern Irish residents applying for Irish passports rose by 2 per cent to 84,855.Overall, 822,581 passports were issued this year.Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said the number of passport applications had risen since the Brexit vote in June 2016.He said extra staff were required for the Passport Service as a further surge in applications was anticipated in 2019, especially in the context of a no deal Brexit.An expansion of the Online Renewal Passport Service now allows all Irish citizens to renew their passport online.This service has cut costs and reduced turnaround times to 10 working days, excluding postage delivery, with applicants no longer needing to have their photos witnessed by a Garda, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.The oldest online applicant for an Irish passport this year was 99 years old while the youngest was two weeks old.Mr Coveney said it was important the Passport Service use technology to “deliver the best possible service to the citizen”.With over 7,000 passports reported lost or stolen annually, the Tánaiste also reminded citizens to look after their documents.“The Irish passport is a valuable document. My department continues to strengthen all processes to prevent fraud and maintain its integrity and security. I strongly encourage all citizens to take due care with their passport at home and when travelling. Citizens may also wish to consider applying for the convenient credit-card sized Passport Card.”During peak periods, more than 6,500 applications were submitted on a single day.Dublin had the highest number of applicants of any Irish county, with close to 45,000 people looking for new passports. This was followed by Cork, which had 14,632 and Kildare with 7,364.Requests for Irish passports were received by embassies across the world. Minister Doherty Introduces Significant Change to Jobseeker’s Benefit for Workers in Seasonal, Casual and Part-time EmploymentFriday, 21 December 2018: The Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty TD, today announced that she was updating and changing regulations regarding employment rights and earnings for workers with subsidiary employment – this includes those with seasonal, casual and part-time employment.Minister Doherty said;“I have decided to change the regulations around Jobseeker’s Benefit for workers with subsidiary employment to provide a fairer and more flexible system for people who want to work. The new regulation, which will take effect on New Year’s Day, will allow workers with subsidiary seasonal and casual employment to earn €7,500 a year without it impacting on their rights to Jobseeker’s Benefit when work is scarce.&quot;The current rate of €12.70 a day for subsidiary work for people who take on such short term employment was last set in 1991. <h3>Budget 2019: changes to National minimum wage</h3>The national minimum wage will increase from €9.55 per hour to €9.80 per hour (from 1 January 2019).<h2>Rules</h2><h3>Calculating the hourly rate</h3>Under Section 20 of the National Minimum Wage Act 2000, the basic method of calculation is to divide the gross pay by the total number of hours worked. To begin with, however, it is necessary to note what pay is taken into account, what hours are included as working hours and what is the pay reference period (over what period the calculation is made).<h4>What does not count as pay?</h4>The following items are not to be included in the minimum wage calculation:<ul><li>Overtime premium</li><li>Call-out premium</li><li>Service pay</li><li>Unsocial hours premium</li><li>Tips which are placed in a central fund managed by the employer and paid as part of your wages</li><li>Premiums for working public holidays, Saturdays or Sundays</li><li>Allowances for special or additional duties</li><li>On-call or standby allowances</li><li>Certain payments in relation to absences from work, for example, sick pay, holiday pay or pay during health and safety leave</li><li>Payment connected with leaving the employment including retirement</li><li>Contributions paid by the employer into any occupational pension scheme available to you</li><li>Redundancy payments</li><li>An advance payment of, for example, salary: the amount involved will be taken into account for the period in which it would normally have been paid</li><li>Payment in kind or benefit in kind, other than board and/or lodgings</li><li>Payment not connected with the person&#39;s employment</li><li>Compensation for injury or loss of tools</li><li>Award as part of a staff suggestion scheme</li><li>Loan by the employer to you</li></ul><h4>What counts as pay?</h4>For the purposes of the national minimum wage your gross wage includes, for example, the basic salary and any shift premium, bonus or service charge.If you receive food (known as board) and/or accommodation (known as lodgings) from your employer, the following amounts are included in the minimum wage calculation:<ul><li>€0.85 per hour worked for board only (calculation at hourly rate)</li><li>€22.56 for lodgings only per week, or €3.24 per day</li></ul>You can read more in the Low Pay Commission report on the allowances provided for board and lodgings under the National Minimum Wage 2017 (pdf). The Commission recommends that the allowances may be reviewed annually in conjunction with the review of the national minimum wage.<h4>Working hours</h4>Your working hours are whichever is the greater:<ul><li>The hours set out in any document such as a contract of employment, collective agreement or statement of terms of employment provided under the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994,</li></ul>or<ul><li>The actual hours worked or available for work and paid</li></ul>&quot;Working hours&quot; include:<ul><li>Overtime</li><li>Travel time where this is part of the job</li><li>Time spent on training authorised by the employer and during normal working hours</li></ul>&quot;Working hours&quot; does not include:<ul><li>Time spent on standby other than at the workplace</li><li>Time on leave, lay-off, strike or after payment in lieu of notice</li><li>Time spent travelling to or from work</li></ul><h4>Pay reference period</h4>The employer selects the period, known as the pay reference period, from which the average hourly pay will be calculated. This might be, for example, on a weekly or fortnightly basis, but cannot be for a period longer than a month.The employer must include details of the pay reference period in the statement of employment conditions to be given to an employee under the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994.You may request a written statement from your employer of your average rate of pay for any pay reference period within the last 12 months. The employer has 4 weeks to supply the statement.<h3>Exceptions to those entitled to receive the national minimum wage</h3>There are some exceptions to those entitled to receive the national minimum wage. The legislation does not apply to a person employed by a close relative (for example, a spouse, civil partner or parent) nor does it apply to those in statutory apprenticeships. Also some employees such as young people under 18 and trainees are only guaranteed a reduced or sub-minimum rate of the national minimum wage.<h4>Sub-minimum rates</h4>Under the National Minimum Wage Act young people and those in the first 2 years of employment can be paid lower rates – called sub-minimum rates. See ‘Sub-minimum rates’ below for examples of how these rates are applied depending on age and experience.<h4>Trainees</h4>The National Minimum Wage Act also provides sub-minimum rates which apply to employees who are aged over 18 and undergoing a course of structured training or directed study that is authorised or approved of by the employer - see &#39;Rates&#39; belowThe Act provides certain criteria which the training course must meet if the trainee rates are to apply. For example, the training or study must be for the purposes of improving the work performance of the employee; the employee&#39;s participation on the training or study must be directed or approved by the employer; at least 10% of the training must occur away from the employee’s ordinary operational duties; there must be an assessment and certification procedure or written confirmation on the completion of the training course.<h3>Exemption for employer</h3>If an employer cannot afford to pay the national minimum wage due to financial difficulty the Labour Court may exempt an employer from paying the minimum wage rate for between 3 months and one year. Only one such exemption can be allowed.The employer must apply to the Labour Court for the exemption with the consent of a majority of the employees, who must also agree to be bound by the Labour Court decision.The employer must demonstrate that they are unable to pay the national minimum wage and that, if compelled to do so, would have to lay-off employees or terminate their employment.An exemption may only be sought from paying the full rate of the national minimum wage, not for cases covered by the reduced rate, for example, employees who are under 18 years of age.<h3>Victimisation</h3>If you seek your entitlement to the national minimum wage you are protected from victimisation or dismissal. Victimisation is prohibited by the legislation. In addition, if you are dismissed for seeking the national minimum wage, you may bring a claim for unfair dismissal regardless of length of service or number of hours worked per week.If you are due an increase under the National Minimum Wage Act, your employer cannot reduce your working hours without a corresponding reduction in duties or the amount of work.<h2></h2><h2>How to apply</h2>If you are not receiving the national minimum wage, you may enforce your rights by completing the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. In the online complaint form you have 2 options:You may either request an inspector from the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) to investigate a claim that the national minimum wage is not being paidorYou may refer a dispute to a WRC adjudicator. However this may only be done where you have requested from the employer a statement outlining the calculation of the average hourly pay. You must refer the dispute with 6 months of the supplying of the statement. (The time limit for referral limit may be extended to a maximum of 12 months.) Where the employer fails to provide the statement the time starts from the date at which the employer should have provided the statement, that is within 4 weeks of the request.Note: you may not refer a complaint to both an adjudicator and an inspector in relation to the same dispute under the National Minimum Wage Act.If you are alleging victimisation, you should request that the employer restore your employment conditions to their position before the victimisation. Where the employer fails to do this within 2 weeks of the request, you may refer the matter to the WRC adjudicator. She went to college and, on 1 October 2015, at the age of 20 she started work. She was entitled to 80% of the minimum wage as she was in her first year of employment. On 1 June 2016 she turned 21 but her rate of pay did not increase as she was still in first year of employment after the age of 18. (Her 6-months’ work when aged 17 is not taken into account.) From 1 October 2016 she was entitled to 90% of the minimum wage as she was in her second year of employment. Mary changed job on 1 December 2016 but she was only entitled to 90% of the minimum wage as she continued to be in her second year of employment. She is not entitled to the full minimum wage rate until 1 October 2017. As confirmed in <a href="http://www.moneyguideireland.com/budget-2019-forecasts.html">Budget 2019</a> a Christmas Bonus of 100% was paid in the first week of December 2018 to long term welfare recipients, approximately 900,000 recipients costing an estimated €265 million.Meanwhile PAYE and Self-Employed workers who get up every morning to keep the country running are still paying USC and the same taxes all year round and will have to struggle right through to January Payday. While we’re really happy that families on welfare payments won’t have to struggle so much over Christmas, we’re thinking that it would be nice for the Government to acknowledge PAYE workers also. For some it will be a long &amp; worrying time, unfortunately not all workers are better off because they are “lucky” enough to have a job. The real truth is that for many Irish workers their salary is just not enough to cover the very basics. Rent or mortgage, food, utilities, childcare, medical expenses, school costs, etc., and any change to normal routine of basic living brings escalated stress when you’re living on the bread line. Not all employers can afford to pay workers a Bonus either, so it’s hit and miss for some employees and even those that get a Christmas Bonus will be taxed on it.It raises a number of questions, one being should workers, particularly those on minimum wage receive a tax break in December to get them through Christmas and to thank them for getting up in hail, rain and snow all year round?Note: The Christmas bonus should not be confused with the annual “double week” of welfare and pension payments made just before Christmas.
