Minister Harris announces further changes for school leavers on the CAO portal which opened for applications on 4 November 2022 for 2023/2024Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has confirmed school leavers will now be able to access information on traineeships from the Central Applications Office portal. Since last year, students who log onto <a href="https://www.cao.ie/?page=options">www.cao.ie/options</a> can view all of their options including apprenticeships and further education and training.This year, the range of options will be expanded to include traineeships. Traineeships are schemes that combine classroom education and hands-on work experience, and are run by Education and Training Boards (ETBs) in conjunction with industry representative bodies and employers.Speaking today, Minister Harris said:<blockquote>&quot;Today, the CAO will open for applications. As students begin to consider their options post-school, it is important they are aware of all of the options available to them.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;Third level education is not confined to the walls of a university. Apprenticeships are third level. Post leaving cert courses are third level. Traineeships are third level.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;It is vital young people do not see one particular path as success. Success comes in different shapes and sizes.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;I want to thank the CAO, SOLAS and ETBI for continuing to work together to ensure our school leavers know all of the paths they can take to get to where they need to get to in life.&quot;</blockquote>Through <a href="https://www.cao.ie/?page=options">www.cao.ie/options,</a> 750 further education and training courses will be available with the offering expanding in range and type. From today, there are more than 75 traineeship programmes available on the portal.Many CAO applicants may not be aware that new courses are being developed by Higher Education Institutions all the time. The ever-changing nature of Technology, the Economy and Labour Market trends, means that HEIs constantly review their course listings to reflect where the demands are. Most new courses are designed in collaboration with industry because a need or a particular skills shortage has been identified in an area. Therefore, this will also mean that employment prospects will generally be excellent after graduating from these new courses.Many of these new courses can be added into the CAO system late and may not be visible in College Prospectuses or the CAO Handbook. However, by using the ‘New for 2023’ filter on the <a href="https://careersportal.ie/courses/simple_search.php?default=1&amp;txt=&amp;cols_in=#results">CourseFinder</a> you can keep right up to date with these new offerings. Twitter layoffs to start today, company tells staff in an email

Advice for those at the start of their career journey on how to successfully move from student life to the working world.Have you recently graduated? Are you grieving the loss of your old student life? Are you wondering what it will be like to be a fully fledged member of the working world?I hate to break it to you, and as patronising as it might sound, you really are about to enter the real world, one that will bring a whole load of new lessons. So remember, just because the relentless exam process has finally stopped for you, your learning hasn’t. Far from it.Quite frankly, the prospect of making this life-changing transition can feel terrifying. But it doesn’t need to be. I want to share with you how you can successfully transition from university, college or school to working life – and get your career off to the best start possible Accept that everything is going to changeFrom now on, your life is going to be different in pretty much every way. You’ll have to get used to early mornings, possibly commuting and not going out partying on a Wednesday night, which might mean your social life isn’t perhaps as fun or wild as it once was – during the weekdays, anyway.You may well have moved back in with your parents again or have even moved to a new city, meaning your home life will change too. You must do your best to accept and even embrace these changes. Try to see this change as an opportunity for personal growth and learning, instead of a negative thing.You’ve dealt with change before Remember, you’ve managed to deal with the unsettling feelings that come with change in the past, so you’ll adapt quickly again this time. Think back to when you first started university. Everything about your life changed overnight, but you quickly managed to settle in, in what felt like the blink of an eye.Adjusting to the changes that come with starting your new job is no different. You are more adaptable than you think, so draw some confidence from that as you prepare to enter the next chapter of your life. Understand these changes are only temporarily unsettling, and you will quickly form new habits, schedules and rituals, and importantly, start to enjoy your new life.Keep an open mindI’m sure you’ve long wondered what the ‘corporate world’ is really like, being an eager spectator from the outside, waiting for your time to enter it. You’ve probably formed some strong assumptions over the years – both good and bad – from family, friends, lecturers, careers advisers, even TV programmes and films.Of course, some of these assumptions will be more accurate than others. So, try to keep an open mind as you embark on your first job, free from preconceived ideas about what it will be like.Be patient and persevereIf you’re about to start your first proper job, some of your responsibilities will likely be relatively admin-based, at least to begin with. This won’t be the case forever, so try to understand and appreciate that from the outset, instead of feeling unmotivated or dejected.As you climb your career ladder and become more senior, your responsibilities and tasks will become more interesting and advanced. So, be patient, stay motivated and persevere.Your first job won’t be your lastIt’s important to understand that your first job won’t be your last one, for the simple reason that we’re all living and working for longer than we have ever done in the past.So, if your first job isn’t everything you thought it would be, don’t worry too much. This is just the first stage of your career journey – you have a wealth of experiences ahead of you. Take as much as you can from your current role, and then move on.Don’t compare yourself to your friendsIn the era of social media, when it feels as if everyone is on a quest for more ‘likes’, it can be easy to start comparing yourself to your friends from university. The <a href="https://www.independent.ie/topics/hse-40382182/">HSE</a> is offering relocation packages of more than €4,000 to health staff working abroad, in a bid a woo them to come and work here.The relocation package being offered to health workers in the EU includes up to €3,910 in an accommodation allowance for the first month in Ireland, and a flight payment of up to €250.For candidates coming from outside the EU, the subsidy includes a flight allowance of up to €800. Candidates are also entitled to top-up payments to cover other expenses – such as registration fees for regulatory bodies such as the Medical Council, visa charges and aptitude costs, as well as other levies.A HSE spokesman said the “exact cost is dependent on where the candidate is relocating from, and the specialty of the post.”It comes as the health service is trying to come up with ways to overcome difficulties in recruiting key staff to help reduce waiting lists and provide a full range of services.Department of Health secretary-general <a href="https://www.independent.ie/topics/robert-watt-40390140/">Robert Watt</a> told the Oireachtas Health Committee yesterday that the HSE “has developed and implemented a globally competitive relocation package to attract international recruits to the Irish health service”. He said: “At this stage we expect the increase in whole-time equivalent (WTE, or full-time jobs) to be approximately 4,600 this year”.“By the end of August, year-to-date staffing levels show a total growth of 2,600 WTE. All staff categories are showing growth year-to-date with the largest WTE increase seen in nursing and midwifery at more than 1,104.ADVERTISEMENT ×“All nursing and midwifery graduates from the class of 2022 have and are being offered permanent opportunities within the Irish publicly funded health services.“To supplement the national pool, the HSE has implemented a significant drive to source nurses and midwives from the international market.&quot;As you will have seen from recent research published by my department, we will have to dramatically increase the numbers of nurses and midwives we train in order to reduce our reliance on such international recruitment. “This incremental increase has begun over the last three years, with an additional 344 undergraduate training places for nurses and midwives in place.

“The HSE has similarly directly targeted all of the health and social care professionals 2022 graduates from Irish colleges, and these applicants are being interviewed and will be offered jobs from October onwards. To supplement the national pool, international campaigns have been launched for dieticians, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists.“The Department of Health is working with the Department of Further and Higher Education to increase the number of these students in Irish colleges with an initial request for 10pc in this year and an increase of 50pc over a three-year period.”He said recruitment capacity had been increased significantly within the Public Appointment Service to aid the recruitment of medical consultants, and the HSE was also developing targeted marketing initiatives to enhance the candidate pool.In particular, the initiative focuses on ‘hard to fill’ posts.In recognition of the scale of global competition for healthcare talent, the HSE has developed and implemented a globally competitive relocation package to attract international recruits to the Irish health service.He said that in common with other healthcare professions, the number of Irish and EU medical graduates we produce was currently far short of what was needed.”We must meet the needs of the health service in the future. While we are making progress in recruitment and reform, we need to accelerate to meet emerging and increasing demand,” he added.
