Many organisations are struggling with how to get workers to come back to the office after they have been working remotely. At first, different companies tried incentives, ranging from better food to more relaxed working conditions, but these do not seem to have done the trick.Let&#39;s face it: employees do not want to return to the office. Once you have gone months or even years without the daily commute, endless pointless meetings, office gossip and backstabbing and the like, you probably will not be tempted back with the sorts of incentives that have been offered to date.As a result, companies are increasingly resorting to more coercive approaches. Many major organisations are now threatening employees with a range of sanctions, including dismissal if they do not return to the office. Time to Return to the Office?

The <a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/tags/garda-siochana/"></a>Garda is set to offer higher rates of remuneration to recruits when they initially join the force in a bid to attract greater numbers and, in particular, good-quality candidates. The increase in pay is being recommended to Government by senior Garda management in what sources say is part of the biggest shake-up in Garda recruitment and retention for decades.It is also possible some allowances, for all Garda members, would be changed to marginally increase remuneration, in a bid to help retain serving members.Senior Garda management is concerned changing demographics in the Republic have undermined Garda recruitment. Better pay for new Garda recruits & age limit for entry increased

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD officially opened the Craft Skills Training Hub at Louth Meath ETB Drogheda College of the Future, Donore Campus.The opening of the hub will allow the college to provide training for over 300 apprentices each year with three intakes during the year.This is a significant investment and expansion in apprenticeship training in the Louth-Meath area in key craft areas, such as electrical trades.Speaking today, Minister Harris said:<blockquote>“We know we have skills shortages in this country, but today is another important step on the road to addressing that challenge.</blockquote><blockquote>“Today we are following through on our promise, investing in our young people and sparking their interest in the careers on offer here in electrical trades and more.</blockquote><blockquote>“This facility will make a valuable contribution to the availability of skilled workers in the construction industry, helping to achieve the ambition set out in the Government’s Housing for All plan.”</blockquote>Minister Harris added:<blockquote>“I am particularly delighted with this facility, considering that a key recommendation of the Geiran Report in January 2021 was the requirement for more apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programmes in Drogheda. This is exactly what is being delivered here, and all in a state-of-the-art facility.”</blockquote>The Hub represents more than a capital and educational service investment in Drogheda. As well as instructor jobs at the facility, other support positions are in place. This will lead to up to 20 permanent jobs in Drogheda.Further indirect jobs will be created as the apprentices will need to avail of accommodation, services, and hospitality. It is anticipated that this facility will bring up to 450 additional visitors to Drogheda each year.Chief executive, Louth Meath Education and Training Board, Martin O’Brien said:<blockquote>“LMETB is extremely proud to be the first ETB to establish an innovative FET centre uniquely dedicated at this time to the delivery of electrical apprenticeship training in Ireland.</blockquote><blockquote>“LMETB acknowledges and thanks Minister Simon Harris and his officials from the Department of Further and Higher Education Research Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) and SOLAS management for their support and investment in this unique concept.</blockquote><blockquote>“Drogheda College will be of enormous benefit to the young people of Louth and Meath and surrounding counties in addition to stimulating business development further in this region. I especially want to thank my team in LMETB for their hard work and dedication in the submission of our successful bid and then transforming this building into a reality in a 16-week construction period. Approximately 99% of cinemas will participate in this initiative, offering a wide variety of new and recent releases for audiences to enjoy, including family favourites that all the family can enjoy as a treat as schools reopen.Cinemas in every county are participating, meaning easy access for audiences to big-screen entertainment in their home county.Off the back of a blockbuster summer and the massive popularity of both Barbie and Oppenheimer, the cinema industry in Ireland has united to celebrate the ritual of cinema-going and the important place it has in Irish life.For many years, Ireland has had the highest cinema attendance per capita in Europe. National Cinema Day 2023

Highest Rate of People in Employment in Ireland Since Records Began

Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, has today welcomed the opening of the 2023 campaign for the position of Recruit Prison Officer in the Irish Prison Service and urges all passionate and driven individuals with an interest to apply for the Competition.The Public Appointments Service on behalf of the Irish Prison Service is running the competition. The Prison Service intends to recruit up to 250 Recruit Prison Officers in 2023 with an additional 300 in 2024.This is a chance to contribute meaningfully to society, make a lasting impact, and embark on a fulfilling journey within the Irish Prison Service.Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee said,<blockquote>“I am delighted that applicants can now apply to join the Irish Prison Service through the 2023 Recruit Prison Officer Competition. The Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, has today announced that victims of domestic violence will receive their full pay if they need to take domestic violence leave.Domestic violence leave will be formally introduced in the autumn with the publication of regulations setting out the rate of pay and guidance for employers, currently being developed by Women’s Aid. The new form of leave was introduced as part of the Work Life Balance Act, passed earlier this year.Speaking today, Minister O’Gorman said:<blockquote>‘Domestic violence leave gives a victim of domestic violence the chance to access support without impacting on their employment and income. It is important that they can take the leave without worrying about losing income or being put at more risk. Ensuring that they can receive their full pay will go a long way to help with this.’</blockquote>The decision on the rate of pay was reached following consultation with employers&#39; representatives, trade unions and domestic violence support organisations. All courses provide job-readiness training and most offer the opportunity for work placement, project-based learning or industry site visits where appropriate.All courses approved for funding under Springboard+ are selected following a competitive tendering process, with multi-annual funding arrangements in place. In particular, courses with a proven track record in getting people back into employment are recommended for funding. The majority of courses approved under Springboard+ 2023 will start later in 2023 and in early 2024.<h3>Human Capital Initiative Pillar 1 – Graduate Conversion Courses</h3>The Human Capital Initiative (HCI) was announced as part of Budget 2019. The initiative provides additional capacity across the Higher Education Sector to meet priority skill needs for enterprise. Graduate Conversion Programmes under HCI Pillar 1 offer incentivised places for graduates to reskill in areas of skills shortage and emerging technologies. These are being run alongside, and complementary to, the Springboard+ offerings.These courses are one year, full time conversion and part-time courses at Levels 7-9, in areas of identified skills need, building on experience of the ICT Conversion Courses under Springboard+. To date, HCI Pillar 1 has provided 7,288 graduate conversion places on 95 courses over a 3-year period.Under HCI Pillar 1 2023 a call for proposals was published to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in January 2023.
