Overview of the role The core purpose of the Brain Injury and Stroke Rehabilitation Clinical Nurse Specialist (BI/Stroke CNS) is to provide specialist nursing care for NRH patients, while working within their scope of practice. The role will be supported by the general CNS competencies. An overview of the role includes: · The BI/Stroke CNS will be responsible for the provision of specialist nursing care to adult patients with a brain injury/stroke. The role will manage a caseload of patients with acquired brain injuries, in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. The role encompasses a major clinical focus comprising of assessment, interpretation, planning, initiating, and evaluating patient care. · The BI/Stroke CNS may be consulted for specific non-acquired brain injury review if relevant to the patient’s rehabilitation journey (e.g. SCSC patient with epilepsy) and if it is deemed within the BI/Stroke CNS’s scope of practice. · The BI/Stroke CNS role will develop a post-discharge liaison service for patients within the Brain Injury Programme (including Stroke). · The BI/Stroke CNS is a practitioner with extensive clinical knowledge and expertise in the specialist field. The role will encompass sharing knowledge through appropriate teaching platforms. · The BI/Stroke CNS will apply evidence-based practice, act as a patient advocate, and provide health promotion and education to the patient group. · The BI/Stroke CNS will incorporate a quality aspect to their role, participating in appropriate quality initiatives, practice development, service development, auditing and research as agreed by the Director of Nursing. Qualifications and Knowledge/Experience/Skills The candidate must, on the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office: · Registered on the General Division of Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). · Minimum of five years’ full-time post-registration clinical experience is essential. · Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a relevant speciality area (e.g. Acquired Brain Injury, Stroke, Neurology, Neurosurgery and/or Neuro-Rehabilitation) is essential. · Formal recognised post-registration education relevant to the area of specialist practice (Acquired Brain Injury, Stroke, Neurology, Neurosurgery and/or Neuro-Rehabilitation ) at Level 8 (or higher) according to the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) National Framework is essential, or willingness to complete within 2 years of accepting the post. · Computer skills are essential. · Ability to work on own initiative and as part of the interdisciplinary team. · Ability to develop relevant guidelines, policies, protocols and procedures. · Proven clinical and professional ability, leadership, communication, and organisational skills. · Evidence of service development is desirable. · Management course desirable.
